David Defeats the Philistines Twice

Study note

When the Philistines heard David was king, they attacked. David asked God what to do, and God said, 'Go! I will give them to you.' David won and named the place Baal-Perazim. When the Philistines attacked again, God gave different instructions: circle around and attack from the rear when you hear marching in the treetops. David obeyed and won again. His fame spread to all nations.

8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they sent their entire army to capture him. But David learned about their plans and went out to meet them. And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.
9 The Philistines had already arrived and were raiding the Valley of Rephaim. And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
10 David asked God, 'Should I go and fight the Philistines? Will you give me victory over them?' The Lord answered, 'Go! I will hand them over to you.' And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
11 So they came up to Baal-perazim; and David defeated them there. Then David said, God has broken in upon my enemies by my hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim. So they came up to Baal-perazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.
12 The Philistines ran away and left their idols behind. David gave orders to burn them. And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.
13 The Philistines came back and raided the valley a second time. And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.
14 David asked God what to do again. This time God said, 'Do not attack them head-on. Instead, go around behind them and come at them from near the balsam trees.' Therefore David inquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
15 'When you hear what sounds like an army marching through the tops of the balsam trees, charge into battle! That will be the signal that God has gone out ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.' And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.
16 David did exactly what God told him to do. They drove the Philistine army back all the way from Gibeon to Gezer. David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.
17 David became famous in every country. The Lord made all the nations afraid of him. And the fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.
