The Three Families of Musicians
Study note
David and his military commanders set apart musicians from three Levite families for worship service. The sons of Asaph served under Asaph's direction and the king's orders. The sons of Jeduthun prophesied with harps, giving thanks and praise. The sons of Heman, the king's prophet, were the largest group with 14 sons and 3 daughters. In ancient Israel, music was considered a form of prophecy -- a way of speaking God's words to the people. The total number of trained and skilled musicians was 288.
1 David and his army commanders assigned special duties to the descendants of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun. Their job was to prophesy through music, using harps, lyres, and cymbals. Here are the men who served in this way: Moreover David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen according to their service was:
2 From Asaph's sons: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah. They served under their father Asaph, who prophesied as the king directed. Of the sons of Asaph; Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asarelah, the sons of Asaph under the hands of Asaph, which prophesied according to the order of the king.
3 From Jeduthun's sons: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah -- six altogether. They served under their father Jeduthun, who used a harp when prophesying and giving thanks and praise to the Lord. Of Jeduthun: the sons of Jeduthun; Gedaliah, and Zeri, and Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the hands of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with a harp, to give thanks and to praise the LORD.
4 From Heman's sons: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. Of Heman: the sons of Heman; Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth:
5 All of these were sons of Heman, who served as the king's prophet. God had promised to honor Heman, so he gave him fourteen sons and three daughters. All these were the sons of Heman the king's seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn. And God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.
6 All these men served under their fathers for the music ministry in the Lord's temple. They played cymbals, lyres, and harps for worship in God's house. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman reported to the king. All these were under the hands of their father for song in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God, according to the king's order to Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman.
7 Counting them and all their trained relatives who were skilled at making music for the Lord, there were 288 musicians in all. So the number of them, with their brethren that were instructed in the songs of the LORD, even all that were cunning, was two hundred fourscore and eight.
The 24 Divisions of Musicians
Study note
The 288 musicians were divided into 24 groups of 12 each. Their order of service was determined by casting lots, just like the priestly divisions. This ensured that teachers and students, old and young, experienced and new, all had equal chances. Each group took turns providing music for the temple worship. This careful organization shows how seriously Israel took the role of music in worshipping God.
8 They drew lots to set the order of their service. Everyone was treated equally -- young and old, teacher and student alike. And they cast lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar.
9 The first lot went to Joseph from Asaph's family. The second went to Gedaliah, and with his sons and relatives there were 12. Now the first lot came forth for Asaph to Joseph: the second to Gedaliah, who with his brethren and sons were twelve:
