What happens in 1 John 1

John opens with an eyewitness declaration about the Word of life who was seen, heard, and touched. He then presents the foundational message that God is light, and calls believers to walk in the light, confess their sins, and experience the cleansing blood of Jesus.

1 John 1

The Word of Life Proclaimed

Study note

John begins with the authority of firsthand experience: he and the other apostles have heard, seen, looked upon, and touched the Word of life who was with the Father from the beginning and has been revealed. They proclaim this testimony so that their readers may share in the fellowship that the apostles enjoy with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ, making their joy complete.

1 We are telling you about the Word of life, who has existed from the very beginning. We heard him speak. We saw him with our own eyes. We watched him closely, and we touched him with our own hands. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 This life appeared before us! We saw him and can tell you about him. We are sharing with you about eternal life itself -- life that was with the Father and then appeared to us. (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 We are passing along to you what we saw and heard so that you can share in the special closeness we have. And that closeness is with God the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
4 We are writing these things so that together our joy will overflow completely. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

Walking in the Light

Study note

John declares the core message received from Christ: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. Anyone who claims fellowship with God while walking in darkness is lying and not living by the truth. But those who walk in the light as God is in the light have genuine fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses them from all sin.

5 This is the message we received from Jesus and are now sharing with you: God is light. There is not even a tiny speck of darkness in him. This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say we are close to God but keep living in darkness, we are lying and not living by the truth. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But when we live in the light, the same way God is in the light, we share real closeness with each other. And the blood of Jesus, his Son, washes away every sin. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Confessing Sin and Finding Cleansing

Study note

John addresses three false claims. To say we have no sin is self-deception. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. To claim we have never sinned makes God a liar and shows that his word has no place in us. This passage balances the call to holiness with the reality of ongoing human frailty and the sufficiency of God's grace.

8 If we say we have never sinned, we are only fooling ourselves and the truth is not inside us. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we claim we have never done anything wrong, we are calling God a liar, and his word has no place in our hearts. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

How this chapter points to Christ

1 John 1:5 Psalm 27:1

John's declaration that God is light echoes the psalmist's confession that the Lord is his light and salvation, establishing light as a fundamental attribute of God's character.

1 John 1:9 Psalm 32:5

The promise of forgiveness upon confession parallels David's experience: when he acknowledged his sin and did not cover his iniquity, the Lord forgave him.
