Ahab Wants Naboth's Vineyard
Study note
Naboth owned a vineyard in Jezreel next to Ahab's palace. Ahab wanted it for a vegetable garden and offered to buy it or trade for a better vineyard. But Naboth refused because the land was his family inheritance from God. In Israel's law, ancestral land was to be kept in the family permanently. Ahab went home and lay on his bed, sulking and refusing to eat.
1 Some time later, this incident took place. Naboth of Jezreel had a vineyard right next to King Ahab's palace in Samaria. And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.
2 Ahab approached Naboth: "Sell me your vineyard so I can turn it into a vegetable garden. It is right next to my palace. I will give you an even better vineyard somewhere else, or I will pay you cash for it." And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.
3 Naboth told Ahab, "The Lord would never let me hand over the land my ancestors passed down to me." And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.
4 Ahab went home sulking and fuming over Naboth's answer. He threw himself on his bed, faced the wall, and refused to eat. And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
Jezebel's Evil Plot
Study note
Jezebel mocked Ahab for his weakness and took matters into her own hands. She wrote letters in Ahab's name, sealed them with his royal seal, and sent them to the elders and nobles of Jezreel. She ordered them to proclaim a fast, seat Naboth in a place of honor, then have two worthless men falsely accuse him of cursing God and the king. The plan worked. Naboth was stoned to death. When Jezebel heard the news, she told Ahab to go take the vineyard.
5 His wife Jezebel came in and asked, "What is wrong with you? Why are you moping around and refusing to eat?" But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?
6 He explained, "I asked Naboth to sell me his vineyard or let me trade him a better one, and he flat-out refused." And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.
7 Jezebel sneered, "Is this how the king of Israel behaves? Get up! Eat something! Stop pouting! I will get you Naboth's vineyard." And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.
8 She wrote letters using Ahab's name and sealed them with his royal seal. Then she sent them to the elders and leading citizens of Naboth's town. So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth.
9 The letters said, "Call for a day of religious fasting. Give Naboth an important seat in front of everyone." And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people:
10 "Put two liars across from him to accuse him publicly of cursing God and the king. Then drag him out and stone him to death." And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.
11 The elders and officials did exactly what Jezebel told them to do. And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them.
12 They declared a fast and gave Naboth a place of honor. They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.
13 The two liars came in, sat across from Naboth, and publicly accused him: "Naboth cursed God and the king." The crowd dragged Naboth outside the city and stoned him to death. And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.
14 They sent a message to Jezebel: "Naboth has been stoned. He is dead." Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.
15 When Jezebel heard the news, she told Ahab, "Get up and claim Naboth's vineyard -- the one he would not sell you. He is no longer alive. He is dead." And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.
16 The moment Ahab heard Naboth was dead, he went straight down to take ownership of Naboth's vineyard. And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
Elijah Pronounces Judgment
Study note
God sent Elijah to meet Ahab in Naboth's vineyard. Ahab greeted him with the words, 'So you have found me, my enemy.' Elijah declared God's judgment: dogs would lick up Ahab's blood in the same place they licked Naboth's blood. Every male in Ahab's family would be destroyed. And Jezebel would be eaten by dogs by the wall of Jezreel. The text adds that no one had ever sold himself to do evil as completely as Ahab, urged on by his wife Jezebel.
17 Then the Lord spoke to Elijah the Tishbite: And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
18 "Go meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules from Samaria. He is down in Naboth's vineyard right now, claiming it as his own." Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it.
19 "Tell him, 'The Lord asks: Did you murder a man and then steal his property?' Then add, 'The Lord declares: Dogs will lick your blood on the exact same spot where they licked up Naboth's blood.'" And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.
20 When Ahab saw Elijah, he blurted out, "So you have tracked me down, my enemy!" Elijah replied, "Yes, I found you. And I found you because you have sold your soul to do what is evil in the Lord's eyes." And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.
21 "I am going to bring disaster on you. I will wipe out every male in your family throughout Israel, whether slave or free." Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel,
22 "I will make your family end up like Jeroboam's and like Baasha's. You have made me angry and led Israel into sin." And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin.
23 "As for Jezebel, the Lord declares: Dogs will eat Jezebel near the wall of Jezreel." And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.
24 "Any member of Ahab's family who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs. Any who die in the countryside will be eaten by birds." Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.
25 No one ever matched Ahab in selling himself out to do evil in the Lord's sight, spurred on by his wife Jezebel. But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.
26 He did the most vile acts by chasing idols. He acted just like the Amorites. The Lord had driven them out for Israel. And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
Ahab Humbles Himself
Study note
When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, fasted, and walked around in grief. God noticed Ahab's humility and told Elijah that the full disaster would not come during Ahab's lifetime but during the reign of his son.
27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes. He put on rough cloth next to his skin. He refused to eat, slept in rough cloth, and walked around quiet and humbled. And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.
28 The Lord spoke to Elijah the Tishbite: And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
29 "Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has bowed low before me, I will not bring this disaster during his lifetime. Instead, I will bring it on his family during his son's reign." Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house.
