What happens in 1 Peter 1

Peter opens with praise to God for the living hope of salvation and an imperishable inheritance. He then calls believers to holy living, grounding their conduct in the precious blood of Christ and the enduring word of God.

1 Peter 1

Greeting and a Living Hope

Study note

Peter addresses scattered believers as God's chosen people, set apart by the Spirit for obedience. He praises God for the new birth into a living hope through Christ's resurrection, and for an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for those who are guarded by God's power through faith.

1 From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God's chosen people who are living as strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2 God the Father knew you and chose you long ago. The Spirit has set you apart to obey Jesus Christ and be made clean by his blood. May you receive more and more of God's kindness and peace. Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
3 All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy, he has given us a new life. We have a living hope because Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 God is keeping an amazing reward in heaven for you. It cannot break, it cannot go bad, and it will never lose its beauty. To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 Through your faith, God's power guards you like a shield. It protects you until the day your full salvation is shown at the end of time. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Refined Faith Through Trials

Study note

Peter acknowledges the grief of present trials but reframes them as a refining process more precious than gold tested by fire. The purpose of this testing is that faith may be found genuine at the appearing of Jesus Christ. Though believers have not seen Christ, they love him and rejoice with an inexpressible, glorious joy as they receive the outcome of their faith: the salvation of their souls.

6 This should fill you with joy, even though right now you may have to go through different kinds of painful trials for a little while. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
7 These trials are testing your faith to prove that it is real. Your faith is worth far more than gold, which can be destroyed even after being tested by fire. When your faith passes the test, it will bring praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ appears. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 You have never seen Jesus, but you love him. You cannot see him right now, but you trust in him. And you are filled with an amazing joy that is too wonderful to put into words -- a joy that is full of heavenly glory. Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
9 You are receiving what your faith has been working toward all along: the rescue of your souls. Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Prophets and Angels Longed to See This

Study note

Peter reveals that the Old Testament prophets searched intently to understand the salvation they foretold, seeking to know the time and circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was pointing to. They were serving not themselves but future believers. Even the angels long to look into these things, highlighting the extraordinary privilege of those who now receive the gospel.

10 The prophets studied and searched carefully about this salvation. They spoke long ago about the gift of grace that was coming your way. Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 The Spirit of Christ was inside them, telling them ahead of time about the sufferings Christ would go through and the glory that would follow. They kept searching to find out when and how this would happen. Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 God showed them that their message was not for their own time but for yours. Now that same message has been told to you by people who preached the good news through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels wish they could look into these things! Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

Called to Holy Living

Study note

Peter calls believers to prepare their minds for action and to set their hope fully on the grace coming at Christ's revelation. As obedient children, they must no longer conform to their former ignorant desires but must be holy in all conduct, because God who called them is holy.

13 So get your mind ready for action. Stay alert and in control of yourself. Put all your hope in the gift of grace coming to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14 You are God's children now, so obey him. Do not go back to the old life you lived before you knew better. Back then, you followed whatever you craved. As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 Instead, be holy in every part of your life. Be like the God who invited you into his family. He is holy. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 After all, the Scripture says, "Be holy, because I am holy." Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb

Study note

Peter reminds believers that they were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. Christ was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in the last times for their sake. Through him, their faith and hope are in God who raised him and gave him glory.

17 You call on a Father who judges everyone fairly. He does not play favorites. So live with deep respect for him during your time on earth. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
18 You know that you were not rescued from your empty old way of living with things that lose their value, like silver or gold. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 No, the price paid for you was the precious blood of Christ. He was like a perfect lamb with nothing wrong with him. But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 God planned this before the world even began, but he made it happen now in these final days for your sake. Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21 Through Christ, you have placed your trust in God, who raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory. So your faith and your hope rest completely in God. Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Born Again Through the Living Word

Study note

Having purified their souls through obedience to the truth, believers are called to love one another deeply from a pure heart. They have been born again not of perishable seed but of imperishable seed through the living and enduring word of God. Peter quotes Isaiah to emphasize that while human glory fades like grass and flowers, the word of the Lord endures forever.

22 You have made your hearts clean by following the truth. You truly love your fellow believers. So love each other deeply with all you have. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 You have been born into a new life. This new birth did not come from something that will die and fade away, but from something that will last forever -- the living word of God. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24 As the Scripture says, all people are like grass, and all their greatness is like a wildflower. The grass dries up and the flower drops off, For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 but the word of the Lord stands forever. And this word is the good news that has been shared with you. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
