2 John 1

Greeting in Truth and Love

Study note

John introduces himself as the elder and writes to the chosen lady and her children, expressing love that is shared by all who know the truth. This truth dwells in believers and will be with them forever. He pronounces a blessing of grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Son, grounding fellowship in both truth and love.

1 From the elder. To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love because of the truth -- and not me, but everyone who knows the truth. The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
2 We love you because the truth lives in us and will be with us forever. For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
3 Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, will be with us in truth and love. Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Walking in Truth and Love

Study note

John rejoices that some of the lady's children are walking in the truth according to the Father's command. He then urges the community to love one another, clarifying that this is not a new commandment but one they have had from the beginning. Love is defined as walking according to God's commandments, and this is the commandment they have heard from the start.

4 It made me so happy to learn that some of your children are living by the truth. They are doing just what the Father told us to do. I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
5 And now, dear lady, I have a request for you. It is not a new rule -- it is the same one we have had from the very beginning: let us love one another. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
6 This is what love means: living by God's instructions. And his instruction, the one you have heard from the very start, is to walk in love. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

Warning Against Deceivers

Study note

John warns that many deceivers have gone into the world who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist. Believers must watch themselves so they do not lose what they have worked for, but instead receive a full reward. Anyone who goes beyond the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever remains in Christ's teaching has both the Father and the Son. John gives the practical instruction not to receive such false teachers into their homes or offer them any greeting, because doing so makes one a partner in their evil work.

7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world. They refuse to say that Jesus Christ came as a real human being. Anyone like that is a deceiver and an antichrist. For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 Be careful so you do not throw away everything we have worked for. Make sure you receive your full reward. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9 Anyone who goes too far and does not stick to what Christ taught does not have God. But whoever stays with the teaching of Christ has both the Father and the Son. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10 If someone shows up and does not bring this teaching, do not welcome them into your home or give them any kind of support. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 Because anyone who supports them becomes a partner in the evil they are doing. For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Closing and Hope to Visit

Study note

John acknowledges he has much more to say but prefers to communicate face to face rather than by letter, so that their shared joy may be complete. He sends greetings from the children of the chosen lady's sister, indicating a network of interconnected churches bound together by love and truth.

12 I have a lot more to say to you, but I would rather not put it in a letter. Instead, I am hoping to visit you and talk in person. Then our joy will be complete. Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
13 The children of your chosen sister say hello. Amen. The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

2 John 1:6 Deuteronomy 6:5-6

The command to walk in love by keeping God's commandments echoes the Shema, Israel's foundational call to love the Lord with all their heart and to keep his words.

Living 2 John 1

Recognize that truth and love are not competing values but inseparable companions: genuine love always operates within the boundaries of truth, and truth without love becomes harsh and lifeless. Be discerning about what teaching you welcome into your life and community, because not every message that sounds spiritual is from God. Prioritize face-to-face relationships within the body of Christ, knowing that personal fellowship brings a depth of joy and mutual encouragement that written communication alone cannot achieve.
