What happens in 2 Samuel 22

David sings a long song of praise to God for rescuing him from all his enemies and from Saul. This psalm celebrates God's power, faithfulness, and justice. It appears almost identically as Psalm 18.

2 Samuel 22

God Is My Rock and Fortress

Study note

David sang this song after God had delivered him from all his enemies, especially from Saul. He piles up images of safety and strength to describe God: rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, stronghold, refuge, and savior. When David was in terrible danger, he cried out to God, and God heard his voice from his heavenly temple.

1 David sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies, including Saul. And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
2 He sang: "The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer." And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
3 "My God is the rock where I take shelter. He is my shield and the source of my victory. He is my fortress, my hiding place, and my savior. He rescues me from violence." The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
4 "I cried out to the Lord, who deserves all praise, and he saved me from my enemies." I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
5 "Death's waves crashed all around me. Torrents of destruction swept over me." When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;
6 "The grave's ropes tangled around me. Death's traps blocked my way." The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
7 "When I was in deep trouble, I cried out to the Lord. I shouted to my God for help. From his heavenly dwelling he heard me. My desperate cry reached his ears." In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.

God Comes to the Rescue

Study note

In dramatic, poetic language, David describes God's rescue as if the earth shook, the skies opened, and God rode down on the wings of the wind. Darkness, clouds, thunder, lightning, and the blast of God's breath are all used to picture God's awesome power in coming to save David. God reached down from heaven, pulled David out of deep waters, and set him in a wide-open, safe place.

8 "The ground shook and trembled. The sky's foundations rocked because God was filled with anger." Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
9 "Smoke billowed from his nostrils. Devouring fire roared from his mouth, with glowing coals blazing out from him." There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
10 "He split open the sky and descended. Thick darkness lay beneath his feet." He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
11 "He rode on a cherub angel and soared through the air, gliding on the wings of the wind." And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
12 "He wrapped himself in darkness on every side, surrounded by dense rain clouds like a curtain." And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
13 "From the brilliance before him, fiery coals burst into flame." Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
14 "The Lord's voice thundered from the sky. The Most High God let his voice boom out." The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
15 "He launched arrows that sent the enemy running. His lightning bolts threw them into total chaos." And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
16 "The ocean floor was laid bare. The earth's very foundations were uncovered by the blast of the Lord's angry breath." And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
17 "He reached down from the highest heaven and grabbed hold of me. He lifted me out of the deep, raging waters." He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
18 "He saved me from enemies who were too powerful for me, from people who hated me and had the strength to destroy me." He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
19 "They attacked me when I was at my weakest, but the Lord was there to hold me up." They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
20 "He brought me out into an open space. He rescued me because I brought him joy." He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

God Rewards the Faithful

Study note

David reflects on the relationship between faithfulness and God's blessing. He claims that God rewarded him because he followed God's ways and did not turn away from his commands. David acknowledges that God shows mercy to the merciful and proves himself against the crooked. God lights David's lamp and is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

21 "The Lord treated me well because I did what was right. He repaid me because I kept my hands clean." The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
22 "I have walked in the Lord's ways. I have not abandoned my God by doing evil." For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 "I keep all his laws in front of me. I have not pushed aside his rules." For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
24 "I have lived honestly before him and have guarded myself from sinning." I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
25 "The Lord rewarded me because I did right, because he saw that my life was clean." Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
26 "When people are loyal to you, you are loyal to them. When people are honest, you are honest with them." With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
27 "When people are pure, you are pure toward them. But when people are twisted, you outsmart them." With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
28 "You rescue humble people, but you watch the proud and bring them down." And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
29 "You, Lord, light up my life. The Lord turns my darkness into brightness." For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.
30 "With your strength I can rush against an army. With my God's help I can leap over a wall." For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.
31 "God's way is flawless. The Lord's word has been tested and proven true. He is a shield protecting everyone who runs to him." As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.

God Gives Victory in Battle

Study note

David praises God for training him for war and giving him strength. God made David sure-footed like a deer, trained his hands for battle, and gave him a shield of victory. God cleared the path before David and enabled him to crush his enemies. David's enemies cried out but no one saved them. David ground them to dust.

32 "Who is God if not the Lord? Who is the solid rock if not our God?" For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
33 "God is my mighty fortress. He clears the path before me and makes it smooth." God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
34 "He gives me feet as sure as a deer's and places me on the highest ground." He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.
35 "He teaches my hands to fight, so my arms can bend the toughest bow." He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
36 "You handed me the shield of your salvation. Your willingness to help has made me great." Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.
37 "You cleared a wide road for me so my feet would not stumble." Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.
38 "I hunted down my enemies and wiped them out. I did not quit until they were gone." I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
39 "I crushed them so completely they could not stand. They fell beneath my feet." And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet.
40 "You gave me the strength I needed for battle. You forced my enemies to their knees before me." For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.
41 "You made my enemies turn and run. I destroyed everyone who hated me." Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
42 "They screamed for help, but nobody came to save them. They cried to the Lord, but he gave no answer." They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.
43 "I ground them into dust, as fine as dirt. I stomped them flat like mud in the streets." Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.
44 "You saved me from the attacks of my own people. You made me the ruler of nations. People I had never met now serve me." Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
45 "Foreigners grovel before me. The moment they hear my name, they obey." Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.
46 "Foreigners lose their courage. They come shaking out of their hiding places." Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.

A Final Song of Praise

Study note

David ends with praise to the living God who gave him victory and lifted him above his enemies. He promises to praise God among the nations. The song concludes with a statement about God's unfailing love toward David and his descendants forever, connecting back to the covenant promise of chapter 7.

47 "The Lord is alive! Praise my Rock! Let God be lifted high -- the Rock who saves me!" The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
48 "He is the God who takes revenge for me. He brings nations under my authority." It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,
49 "He sets me free from my enemies. You raise me high above those who attack me. You snatch me away from violent people." And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
50 "Therefore I praise you, Lord, among the nations. I sing songs honoring your name." Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
51 "God gives his king magnificent victories. He pours out unfailing love on his anointed one -- on David and his descendants for all eternity." He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.
