The End Has Come
Study note
This chapter reads like an urgent alarm bell. God repeats the word 'end' several times to make it clear that judgment is no longer a distant warning but an immediate reality. The morning mentioned is not a sunrise of hope but the dawn of a day of doom. God would judge the people according to their own actions and would show no pity.
1 The Lord spoke to me again. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 "Son of man, the Lord God has this message for the land of Israel: It is over! The end has arrived for every corner of this land." Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD unto the land of Israel; An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land.
3 "Your time is up. I am unleashing my anger on you. I will hold you accountable for how you have lived and make you pay for every disgusting thing you have done." Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations.
4 "There will be no pity from me, no mercy. I am punishing you for your way of life and for every vile act. Then you will acknowledge that I am the Lord." And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
5 The Lord God says: "Catastrophe! A catastrophe worse than anything before is on its way." Thus saith the Lord GOD; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come.
6 "The end is here! It has caught up with you! Look -- it has arrived!" An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come.
7 "Your final hour has come, all of you who live in this land. The time is here. A day of chaos is close. Instead of celebration on the mountains, there will be panic." The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains.
8 "Any moment now I will unleash my full fury on you. I will judge you for how you have behaved and punish you for every detestable thing you have committed." Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations.
9 "No pity. No mercy. Your actions and your revolting behavior will determine your sentence. Then you will discover that I, the Lord, am the one striking you down." And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the LORD that smiteth.
Violence and the Day of Wrath
Study note
Violence and pride had grown like a plant reaching full bloom, and now the harvest of judgment was ready. Normal life would stop. Buying and selling would become meaningless because the whole land was under God's wrath. Even blowing the war trumpet would not help, because no one would have the courage to fight. Everyone would face either sword, famine, or disease.
10 "Look! The day has dawned! Your doom has blossomed! Violence has grown into a weapon of pure evil, and arrogance has reached full bloom." Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded.
11 "Violence now serves as wickedness's tool. Not one of these people will survive. Their wealth will vanish, their importance will disappear, and nobody will mourn for them." Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness: none of them shall remain, nor of their multitude, nor of any of theirs: neither shall there be wailing for them.
12 "Time is up! The day has come! Buyers have no reason to celebrate their bargains, and sellers should not grieve their losses, because God's fury is aimed at every person." The time is come, the day draweth near: let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn: for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.
13 "Sellers will never reclaim what they sold, even if they manage to stay alive. The vision of judgment applies to everyone and will not be taken back. Because of their sins, no one will be able to hold on to their life." For the seller shall not return to that which is sold, although they were yet alive: for the vision is touching the whole multitude thereof, which shall not return; neither shall any strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life.
14 "The war horn will sound. All will be set for battle. But no one will march out to fight. My fury is aimed at every one of them." They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goeth to the battle: for my wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.
15 "Swords wait outside the walls. Sickness and starvation lurk inside. Anyone out in the countryside will die by the sword; anyone hiding in the city will be consumed by disease and hunger." The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him.
Mourning and Worthless Wealth
Study note
Those who escaped would flee to the mountains and mourn like doves. Everyone would be weak with fear. They would dress in rough sackcloth in grief. Their silver and gold, which they had used to make idols, would become worthless. Money cannot save anyone from God's judgment. God would even let invaders enter his own 'secret place,' likely referring to the inner rooms of the temple.
16 "Those lucky enough to escape will run to the mountains. There they will moan like doves, each one crying over their own sins." But they that escape of them shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity.
17 "Everyone's arms will hang limp, and their knees will buckle like water." All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water.
18 "They will dress in rough burlap cloth to show their grief. Terror will wrap around them. Shame will mark every face, and every head will be shaved as a sign of mourning." They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads.
19 "They will throw their silver into the gutters and treat their gold like trash. Neither silver nor gold will rescue them when the Lord's anger strikes. Money will not fill their bellies or satisfy their hunger. In fact, their wealth was the very thing that led them into sin." They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.
20 "They took their gorgeous jewelry and used it to craft repulsive idols and hateful images. Therefore I am turning their precious treasures into something filthy and disgusting." As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things therein: therefore have I set it far from them.
21 "I will hand it all over to invaders as plunder and to the most wicked people on earth as loot. They will treat it with total disrespect." And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it.
22 "I will look the other way while thieves break into my cherished place. They will charge in and defile it." My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it.
Total Collapse of Society
Study note
God told Ezekiel to make a chain, symbolizing the captivity that was coming. The worst of the nations would take over their homes. The proud would be humbled, and their holy places would be violated. One disaster would follow another. The people would desperately look for guidance from prophets, priests, and elders, but none would have answers. The king and the leaders would be paralyzed with grief.
23 "Get the chains ready! The land overflows with murder, and the city is drowning in violence." Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.
24 "I will bring the cruelest nations on earth to seize their homes. I will crush the pride of the powerful, and their sacred places will be desecrated." Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be defiled.
25 "Dread is coming. People will beg for peace, but peace will be nowhere to be found." Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.
26 "Disaster will pile on top of disaster, and rumors will race after rumors. People will beg prophets for a vision, but none will come. Priests will have no guidance, and community leaders will have no wisdom to offer." Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.
27 "The king will grieve, the royal prince will be wrapped in hopelessness, and ordinary citizens will shake with fear. I will give them exactly what their own behavior deserves. I will judge them by their own standards. Then they will learn that I am the Lord." The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
