A Warning to the King
Study note
God tells Jeremiah to go to the king's palace and demand justice. If the kings practice righteousness and protect the helpless, the dynasty will continue. But if they refuse, the palace will become a ruin. Nations passing by will know it happened because Judah broke their covenant with God.
1 The Lord said, "Go down to the palace of Judah's king and deliver this message." Thus saith the LORD; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,
2 "Say, 'Listen to what the Lord says, king of Judah sitting on David's throne. Listen -- you, your officials, and all your people who come through these gates.'" And say, Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:
3 "The Lord says: Do what is fair and right. Protect those who have been robbed from those who mistreated them. Don't take advantage of foreigners, orphans, or widows. Don't use violence against them. Don't kill innocent people here." Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.
4 "If you truly do these things, kings from David's line will keep on ruling. They will ride through these gates in chariots and on horses. Their leaders and people will come with them." For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.
5 "But if you refuse to obey," says the Lord, "I swear on my own name. This palace will become a pile of rubble." But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the LORD, that this house shall become a desolation.
6 The Lord says about the royal palace: "To me, you are as valuable as Gilead or the top of Lebanon. But I will turn you into a desert, into cities where nobody lives." For thus saith the LORD unto the king's house of Judah; Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.
7 "I will send destroyers against you, each carrying their weapons. They will chop down your finest cedar beams and throw them into the fire." And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire.
8 "People from many nations will walk past this city and ask each other, 'Why did the Lord do this to such a great city?'" And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city?
9 "And the answer will be, 'Because they broke their covenant with the Lord their God. They worshipped and served other gods.'" Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.
Mourning for King Shallum
Study note
God tells the people not to weep for the king who died (Josiah) but for the one who was taken away (Shallum/Jehoahaz). He was carried to Egypt and will never return or see his homeland again.
10 "Don't waste your tears on the king who has died. Save your bitter weeping for the one being carried away, because he will never return. He will never see his homeland again." Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.
11 The Lord says this about Shallum son of Josiah. He became king of Judah after his father and was taken away from here. "He will never come back." For thus saith the LORD touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:
12 "He will die in the foreign land where he was taken captive. He will never lay eyes on this land again." But he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more.
Judgment on Jehoiakim
Study note
God condemns King Jehoiakim for building a luxurious palace using forced labor. His father Josiah practiced justice and cared for the poor, and things went well for him. But Jehoiakim cares only about greed and violence. He will die without honor, buried like a donkey.
13 "Disaster is coming for the king who builds his palace through injustice! He builds his upper rooms by cheating. He forces his people to work for nothing. He won't pay them a single coin!" Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;
14 "This king says, 'I'll build myself a great palace with spacious upper rooms.' So he installs large windows, panels everything in cedar, and paints it bright red." That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is ceiled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.
15 "Does having the most cedar make you a great king? Think about your father. He ate and drank and practiced justice and fairness. Life was good for him." Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?
16 "He stood up for the poor and needy, and because of that, things went well. Isn't that what it truly means to know me?" says the Lord. He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the LORD.
17 "But all you care about is getting rich by cheating. You kill people who have done nothing wrong. You use your power to crush and mistreat others." But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.
18 So the Lord says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: "Nobody will mourn for him. No one will cry, 'Oh, my brother! Oh, my sister!' No one will weep, 'Oh, my master! Oh, his glory!'" Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!
19 "He will be buried like a dead donkey — dragged away and dumped outside the gates of Jerusalem." He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
Jerusalem's Lovers Destroyed
Study note
God tells Jerusalem to cry out because all her allies have been destroyed. God spoke to her in times of peace, but she refused to listen. This has been her pattern since her youth.
20 "Go up to Lebanon and cry out. Lift your voice in Bashan. Scream from Abarim, because every nation you depended on has been crushed." Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed.
21 "I warned you when you felt safe and comfortable, but you said, 'I won't listen.' That's been your pattern your whole life. You've never obeyed me." I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.
22 "A fierce wind will sweep away all your leaders, and your allies will be dragged off as prisoners. Then you will finally be ashamed and disgraced because of all your wickedness." The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.
23 "You who live in your fancy 'Lebanon,' nesting high among the cedars — how you will groan when the pain hits you! It will feel like a woman giving birth!" O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail!
Judgment on King Coniah
Study note
God declares that even if Coniah (Jehoiachin) were a signet ring on his right hand, he would still pull him off and hand him over to Nebuchadnezzar. Both he and his mother will be thrown into a foreign land. None of his descendants will ever sit on the throne of David or rule over Judah.
24 "As surely as I live," says the Lord. "Coniah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah -- you could be my own ring on my right hand. I would still yank you off." As I live, saith the LORD, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence;
25 "I will hand you over to the people who scare you and want you dead. I will give you to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his army." And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.
26 "I will throw you and the mother who gave birth to you into a foreign country where neither of you were born. And that is where you will both die." And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.
27 "You will never return to the land you ache to see again." But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.
28 Is Coniah nothing but a broken, worthless pot that nobody wants? Why have he and his children been tossed away into a land they've never known? Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?
29 O land, land, land — hear what the Lord has to say! O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD.
30 The Lord says, "Write this man down as childless — a man who will never succeed in his lifetime. None of his descendants will ever sit on David's throne or rule in Judah again." Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
