Chapter Overview
What happens in Jeremiah 4
God calls Israel to repent with sincere hearts. Then a terrifying vision of invasion from the north unfolds. Jeremiah cries out in anguish as he sees the coming destruction of Judah, describing the land as returning to an empty wasteland.

A Call to True Repentance
Study note
God tells Israel that if they truly return to him and remove their disgusting idols, the nations will be blessed through them. He compares their hard hearts to unplowed ground full of thorns. They need to plow up the hard soil of their hearts, not just go through outward religious motions. Otherwise God's anger will burn like an unstoppable fire.
1 "If you want to come back to me, Israel," says the Lord, "then come all the way back. Get rid of your disgusting idols and stop wandering away from me." If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove.
2 "Then when you make promises and say, 'As the Lord lives,' you will be telling the truth, acting fairly, and doing what is right. And through you, other nations will be blessed and will praise God." And thou shalt swear, The LORD liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
3 The Lord says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem: "Break up the hard, packed soil of your hearts! Don't scatter your seeds among thorny weeds." For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
4 "Give yourselves fully to the Lord. Get rid of the stubbornness in your hearts, people of Judah and Jerusalem. If you don't, my anger will blaze up like a fire no one can put out. This will happen because of the evil things you have done." Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
Warning of Invasion from the North

Jeremiah calls for the alarm to be sounded throughout Judah. A destroyer is coming from the north like a lion from its den. The people are told to put on rough mourning clothes because God's fierce anger has not turned away. When this disaster arrives, even the king and officials will lose their courage.
5 "Sound the alarm all through Judah! Shout the warning loud enough for Jerusalem to hear! Say, 'Blow the trumpets across the whole land!' Cry out, 'Everyone gather together! Run to the cities with strong walls!'" Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.
6 "Raise the warning flag pointing toward Zion! Run for your lives! Don't wait around! Terrible disaster is heading your way from the north." Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
7 "A lion has crept out of its hiding place. A destroyer of nations is on the move. He has left his home to turn your land into an empty wasteland. Your cities will be left in piles of rubble with no one living in them." The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
8 "So put on rough clothes and cry out loud in grief. The Lord's burning anger has not turned away from us." For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us.
9 "When that day arrives," says the Lord, "the king and his officials will lose all their courage. The priests will be horrified, and the prophets will be speechless." And it shall come to pass at that day, saith the LORD, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.
10 Then I cried out, "Lord God! You led these people and Jerusalem to believe everything would be peaceful, but now the enemy's sword is already at their throats!" Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
A Scorching Wind of Judgment

God describes the coming army like a hot desert wind too strong for winnowing grain. Their chariots are like a whirlwind, and their horses are faster than eagles. God pleads with Jerusalem to wash the evil from their hearts. The enemy is coming from the distant north and will surround Judah like guards around a field.
11 At that time, this message will come to the people of Jerusalem: "A blistering hot wind is blowing from the bare desert hills straight toward my people. It is not a gentle breeze for separating grain." At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
12 "This wind is far too powerful for that! And it comes from me. Now I am announcing my judgment against them." Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
13 "Look! The enemy rolls in like storm clouds. Their war chariots spin like a tornado. Their horses are faster than eagles. This is terrible! We are finished!" Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
14 "Jerusalem, wash the evil out of your heart so you can be rescued! How long are you going to hold on to your sinful thoughts?" O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
15 A voice shouts a warning of disaster from the town of Dan and from the hills of Ephraim in the north. For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
16 "Tell the nations! Spread the word in Jerusalem! Enemies are marching from a faraway country, screaming their battle cries against the towns of Judah." Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 "They surround Jerusalem the way guards stand around a field, because she has rebelled against me," says the Lord. As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD.
18 "Your own choices and actions brought this on you. This is your punishment, and it is bitter. It cuts you right to the heart!" Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
Jeremiah's Anguish

In one of the most emotional passages in the book, Jeremiah cries out in physical pain as he envisions the destruction. He hears the war trumpets and sees wave after wave of disaster. God explains that his people are foolish children who are experts at doing evil but do not know how to do good.
19 The pain inside me is unbearable! My heart pounds! I can't stay silent, because I can hear the trumpet blasts and the shouts of war. My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
20 One disaster crashes into the next. The entire land is being destroyed. My shelters are suddenly knocked flat. In a single moment, everything is gone. Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
21 How long do I have to watch battle flags and listen to the sound of war trumpets? How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 "My people are so foolish. They don't know me at all. They are like children who can't understand anything. They are experts at doing wrong, but they have no idea how to do what is right." For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
A Vision of Total Devastation

Jeremiah describes a horrifying vision where the earth returns to the empty chaos that existed before creation. The land is dark and empty. Mountains shake, birds have fled, and all the cities are in ruins. God says the whole land will be ruined, though he will not completely destroy it.
23 I looked at the earth, and it was an empty, shapeless mess. I looked at the sky, and all the light was gone. I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
24 I looked at the mountains, and they were trembling. Every hill was swaying. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
25 I looked around, and not a single person was left. Every bird had disappeared from the sky. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
26 I looked, and the rich farmland had turned into a desert. Every town was smashed to pieces because of the Lord's fierce anger. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.
27 The Lord says, "The whole land will be ruined, but I won't wipe it out completely." For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
28 "The earth will grieve over this, and the sky above will turn dark. I have spoken, and I've made up my mind. I will not change it and I will not back down." For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.
29 When the people hear the thunder of horses and the twang of bows, every town will empty out. People will dive into thick bushes and scramble up onto the rocks. Every city will be completely abandoned. The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
30 You destroyed city, what are you doing? Why are you putting on your finest red clothes and gold jewelry? Why are you painting your eyes? You're making yourself beautiful for nothing. The nations you trusted as lovers have rejected you. Now they want you dead. And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.
31 I hear a scream like a woman in labor, the cry of someone having her very first baby. It is Jerusalem, gasping for air, reaching out her hands and moaning, "I can't take it! I'm dying! Murderers are closing in on me!" For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.

Living Jeremiah 4
Circumcision of the heart rather than outward ritual is what God requires. Delayed repentance has real consequences, and the pain of watching destruction unfold is felt not only by those affected but by the God who warned them. Sincere inner change is always more valuable than external compliance.
