The Woman Caught in Adultery
Study note
The scribes and Pharisees bring a woman caught in adultery before Jesus, testing whether he will contradict the law of Moses. Jesus turns the trap back on them by writing on the ground and declaring, 'Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.' Convicted by their own consciences, the accusers leave one by one. Jesus neither condemns the woman nor condones her sin, instead commanding her to 'go, and sin no more,' perfectly balancing justice and mercy.
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
Early the next morning, he went back to the temple. A crowd gathered around him, and he sat down and began teaching. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
The scribes and Pharisees dragged in a woman who had been caught sleeping with someone who was not her husband. They made her stand before everyone. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
"Teacher," they said, "this woman was caught in the very act of adultery." They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
"The law Moses gave us says women like this should be stoned to death. What do you say about it?" Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
They were trying to trap him so they could accuse him of something. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger, as if he had not heard them. This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
They kept pressing him for an answer. Finally he stood up and said, "Alright -- whichever one of you has never sinned, go ahead and throw the first stone at her." So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
Then he bent down and went right back to writing on the ground. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
One by one, their own guilty consciences got the better of them. Starting with the oldest, they all walked away until Jesus was left alone with the woman. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Jesus stood up and looked around. "Where did everyone go?" he asked her. "Is there nobody left here to condemn you?" When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
"No one, Lord," she answered. Jesus said, "I am not going to condemn you either. Go home now, and leave your life of sin behind." She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
The Light of the World
Study note
Jesus proclaims 'I am the light of the world,' promising that those who follow him will not walk in darkness. When the Pharisees challenge his self-testimony as invalid, Jesus counters that his testimony is true because he knows his origin and destination -- he comes from the Father and returns to the Father. He establishes that both he and the Father testify on his behalf, satisfying the law's requirement of two witnesses.
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
The Pharisees objected, "You are just talking about yourself! We cannot trust what you say about yourself." The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
Jesus answered, "Even though I am speaking about myself, everything I say is true. I know exactly where I came from and exactly where I am going. You have no idea about either one." Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
"You look at things from a purely human point of view. I am not here to judge anyone." Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
"But when I do make a judgment, it is always right, because I am not acting alone -- the Father who sent me stands with me." And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
"Your own law says that when two people agree on something, their testimony can be trusted." It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
"Well, I am one witness, and the Father who sent me is the other." I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
They asked, "Where is this Father of yours?" Jesus said, "You do not know me, and you do not know my Father either. If you truly knew me, you would know my Father too." Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
He said all of this while teaching near the offering boxes in the temple. Nobody arrested him because the right time had not come yet. These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
The Truth Will Set You Free
Study note
Jesus warns that those who refuse to believe in him will die in their sins. He reveals his heavenly origin -- 'I am from above' -- and points forward to the crucifixion as the moment they will understand who he is. To those who believe, he promises that continuing in his word leads to knowing the truth, and the truth sets free. When they claim they have never been enslaved, Jesus explains that everyone who sins is a slave to sin, but the Son can make them truly free.
Jesus said to them again, "I am going to leave, and you will try to find me, but you will die with your sins unforgiven. You cannot come to the place where I am going." Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
The Jewish leaders asked each other, "Is he planning to kill himself? Is that what he means by 'You cannot come where I am going'?" Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
Jesus told them, "You belong to this world down here; I come from the world up there. You are tied to this world; I am not part of this world at all." And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
"Therefore I said your sins will be the death of you. If you refuse to believe that I am who I say I am, you will die with your sins still on you." I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
"Just who do you think you are?" they demanded. Jesus said, "I have been telling you exactly who I am from the very start." Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
"There is so much I could say about you, so much I could point out. But the one who sent me speaks only truth, and I am simply passing along to the world what I have heard from him." I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
They did not catch on that he was talking about his heavenly Father. They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will finally understand that I am who I claim to be. You will realize that I do nothing on my own but only say what my Father has taught me." Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
"The one who sent me is always right here with me. He has never left me on my own, because I always do the things that make him happy." And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
While he was saying all of this, many people decided to believe in him. As he spake these words, many believed on him.
Jesus spoke to the Jewish people who had just believed in him. He said, "If you hold on to my teaching and live by it, then you truly are my followers." Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
They pushed back, saying, "We come from Abraham's line! We have never been anyone's slaves. What do you mean by 'you will be set free'?" They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
Jesus said, "Truly, every person who keeps on sinning is a slave. They are a slave to sin." Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
"A slave does not have a permanent place in the family. But a son belongs there forever." And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
If the Son therefore shall set you free, you shall be free indeed. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Before Abraham Was, I Am
Study note
The confrontation intensifies as Jesus challenges the religious leaders' claim to be Abraham's children, arguing that their murderous intent proves otherwise. He declares that they belong to their father the devil, who is a liar and murderer from the beginning. The dialogue escalates to Jesus' most direct claim of deity: 'Before Abraham was, I am,' explicitly invoking the divine name God revealed to Moses. The leaders pick up stones to kill him for blasphemy, but Jesus hides himself and leaves the temple.
"Yes, I know you are Abraham's descendants. But you are trying to kill me because my message has found no room in your hearts." I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
"I share what I have seen while I was with my Father, and you carry out what you have picked up from your father." I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
"Abraham is our father!" they insisted. Jesus replied, "If you were truly Abraham's children, you would act like Abraham did." They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
"Instead, you are trying to murder me -- a man who has been telling you the truth that I heard straight from God. Abraham never did anything like that." But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
"No, you are acting like your real father." They shot back, "We are not illegitimate! We have one Father, and that is God himself!" Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
Jesus said, "If God were truly your Father, you would love me, because I came from God. I did not show up on my own -- he sent me." Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
"You cannot grasp what I am saying. You are not able to truly hear my message." Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
"Your real father is the devil, and you are carrying out exactly what he wants. Right from the start he was a killer. He never stands with the truth because truth is not part of who he is. Lying is natural for him -- it is his mother tongue, because he is a liar and the inventor of lies." Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
"Yet here I am telling you the truth, and that is exactly why you refuse to believe me." And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
"Can any of you point to a single sin I have committed? If I am telling the truth, why will you not believe what I say?" Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
"Anyone who truly belongs to God pays attention when God speaks. The reason you do not listen is that you do not belong to God." He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
The Jewish leaders fired back, "We were right about you! You are a Samaritan and you have a demon!" Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
Jesus calmly replied, "I do not have a demon. I give honor to my Father, and in return you dishonor me." Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
"I am not trying to build up my own reputation. There is someone else who takes care of that, and he is also the Judge." And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
"I am telling you the truth. Anyone who follows my teaching will never experience death." Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
"Now we know for sure you have a demon!" the Jews exclaimed. "Abraham died! The prophets died! And you are standing here saying, 'Anyone who follows my teaching will never experience death'?" Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
"Who do you think you are? Are you claiming to be greater than our father Abraham? He is dead! The prophets are dead! Just who are you making yourself out to be?" Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
Jesus answered, "If I were just bragging about myself, it would not mean much. But my Father is the one who brings me honor -- the same God you claim to worship." Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
"You do not know him, but I know him perfectly. If I said I did not know him, I would be a liar just like you. I know him, and I live by what he says." Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
"Your ancestor Abraham was thrilled at the thought of seeing my day arrive. He got to see it, and it filled him with joy." Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
The Jews were incredulous. "You are not even fifty years old! How could you have possibly seen Abraham?" Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
Jesus looked at them and said, "I am telling you the absolute truth: before Abraham was even born, I am." Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Furious, they grabbed stones to throw at him. But Jesus slipped out of sight and walked right through the crowd and out of the temple. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
