Warning Against Hypocrisy and Fear
Study note
Jesus warns His disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy, because nothing hidden will remain secret. He tells them not to fear those who can kill the body but rather the one who has power over eternal destiny. God's care extends even to sparrows and the hairs of their heads, so they should not be afraid. He promises that the Holy Spirit will teach them what to say when they face persecution.
1 Meanwhile, a massive crowd of thousands had gathered -- so many that people were stepping all over each other. Jesus first spoke to his disciples: "Be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees. What I mean by that is their phoniness." In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2 "Anything that is covered up now will be uncovered someday. Anything hidden will come to light." For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
3 "Every word you whispered in a dark room will be heard in broad daylight. Every secret you shared behind a closed door will be shouted from the housetops." Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
4 "My friends, let me tell you: do not be scared of people who can kill your body but cannot do anything more after that." And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
5 "Let me tell you who to truly be in awe of: respect the One who has the power to end your life and then throw you into hell. Yes, he is the one to take seriously." But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
6 "Think about this: five sparrows are sold for just two small coins. Yet God does not overlook a single one of them." Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
7 "He even keeps track of every hair on your head. So don't be afraid -- you mean far more to God than a whole sky full of sparrows." But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
8 "Here is a promise. If you stand up for me in front of other people, the Son of man will stand up for you in front of God's angels." Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:
9 "But if you pretend not to know me in front of other people, you will be disowned in front of God's angels." But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
10 "If someone says something against the Son of man, that can be forgiven. But anyone who insults the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
11 "They may drag you before leaders at a house of worship. They may bring you before rulers or other people in charge. Do not worry about what to say in your defense." And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
12 "The Holy Spirit will give you exactly the right words to say when the time comes." For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
The Parable of the Rich Fool
Study note
When someone asks Jesus to settle an inheritance dispute, He warns against greed, saying life does not consist in abundance of possessions. The parable of the rich fool illustrates a man who stores up wealth for himself, planning years of ease, only to die that very night. Jesus' conclusion -- 'This is how it is for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God' -- challenges every assumption about security based on material wealth.
13 Someone in the crowd said, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the family property with me." And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
14 Jesus said, "Friend, no one put me in charge of your property fights." And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
15 Then he said to everyone, "Pay attention! Protect yourselves from every kind of greed. Your life is not measured by how much things you pile up." And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 Then he told them a story: "A wealthy farmer had a field that produced an incredible harvest." And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 "He sat there thinking, 'I have a problem. I do not have enough space to store all of this.'" And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 "Finally he decided, 'Here is my plan: I will knock down my old barns and build much bigger ones. That way I can fit all my grain and belongings inside.'" And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 "'Then I will tell myself: You have it made! You have enough saved up to last for years. Kick back, eat well, drink up, and have a great time.'" And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 "But God said to him, 'What a fool you are! Tonight your life is going to end. Then who gets all of that you piled up?'" But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 "That is what happens to people who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in the things that matter to God." So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Do Not Worry, Seek the Kingdom
Study note
Jesus tells His disciples not to worry about food or clothing, pointing to ravens that God feeds and lilies that God clothes more splendidly than Solomon. Worry cannot add a single hour to life. Instead of chasing what the nations pursue, they should seek God's kingdom with the assurance that the Father is happy to give it to them. True treasure is stored in heaven, and where your treasure is, there your heart will be.
22 Then Jesus told his followers, "Stop worrying about your life. Stop worrying about what food you will eat. Stop worrying about what clothes you will wear." And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
23 "There is so much more to life than food, and your body matters more than what covers it." The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
24 "Look at the ravens. They do not plant seeds or bring in a harvest. They have no storage barn at all. But God makes sure they are fed. And you are worth so much more to him than birds!" Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
25 "Can any of you add even a single hour to your life by worrying about it?" And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?
26 "If worrying cannot do even that tiny thing, why worry about the rest?" If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?
27 "Look at how the wildflowers grow. They do not work hard or make their own clothes. But let me tell you, even King Solomon dressed in all his royal robes was not as beautiful as one of these flowers." Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28 "God dresses up the grass that is growing in the field today and gets tossed in the fire tomorrow. Do you not think he will take even better care of you? Your faith is so small!" If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
29 "So stop obsessing over what you will eat and drink. Quit being anxious about it." And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
30 "People who do not know God spend all their energy chasing after these things. But your Father already knows everything you need." For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31 "Put God's kingdom first, and everything else you need will be provided for you." But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
32 "Don't be afraid, my little flock. It makes your Father genuinely happy to give you the kingdom." Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
33 "Sell your possessions and give the money to people who need it. Build up treasure in heaven that will never run out -- where thieves cannot reach it and moths cannot eat it." Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
34 "Wherever you keep your treasure, that is where your heart will be focused." For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Be Ready for the Master's Return
Study note
Jesus teaches through parables about servants waiting for their master's return, emphasizing constant readiness. The faithful servant who is found watching will be blessed -- remarkably, the master will serve him. Peter asks if this is for the disciples or everyone, and Jesus responds with the parable of the faithful versus unfaithful manager. Greater knowledge brings greater responsibility: the servant who knew his master's will and did not prepare will receive a harsher punishment.
35 "Stay dressed and ready at all times, and keep your lamps lit." Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
36 "Be like household servants who are waiting for their master to come home from a wedding party. The moment he arrives and knocks, they swing the door right open." And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.
37 "Those servants will be so blessed if the master finds them wide awake and ready when he gets home. I promise you, he will put on an apron, seat them at the table, and serve them the meal himself." Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
38 "He might show up in the middle of the night or close to dawn. Those servants who are still awake and ready will be blessed." And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
39 "Think about it this way. If a homeowner knew exactly when a thief was coming, he would have been ready. He would not have let the thief break in." And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.
40 "You need to stay ready too, because the Son of man is going to show up when you are not expecting him." Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
41 Peter asked, "Lord, is this story aimed at us, or are you talking to everyone?" Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?
42 The Lord replied, "Think about who the faithful and wise manager is. He is the one the master trusts to take care of the other servants and make sure they are fed on time." And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
43 "What a blessing for that servant if the master comes home and finds him doing exactly what he was supposed to do." Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
44 "I am telling you, the master will put that servant in charge of everything he owns." Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
45 "But what if that servant starts thinking, 'My master is not coming back anytime soon'? And then he starts beating up the other servants, stuffing himself with food, and getting drunk." But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
46 "That servant's master will show up on a day he is not expecting and at a time he does not know. The master will punish him severely and throw him in with the people who cannot be trusted." The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
47 "A servant who knew what the master wanted but did not get ready or follow through will get a harsh punishment." And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 But the one who did not know, and did things deserving punishment, shall be beaten with few stripes. For to whom much is given, of him much will be required; and to whom much has been entrusted, of him more will be asked. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Division and Discerning the Times
Study note
Jesus reveals that His mission will bring not peace but division, even within families. He rebukes the crowds for being able to read weather signs but not discerning the present spiritual moment. He urges them to settle accounts with their adversary before it is too late, using legal imagery to illustrate the urgency of making things right with God before the time of judgment arrives.
49 "I came to set the earth on fire, and I wish it were already blazing!" I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?
50 "There is a terrible ordeal I must go through first, and I feel the weight of it pressing on me until it is done!" But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
51 "Do you think I came to make everything peaceful? Not at all -- I am telling you, my coming will create division." Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
52 "From now on, a family of five will be split -- three on one side and two on the other." For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 "Fathers and sons will be against each other, and sons against fathers. Mothers and daughters will clash, and daughters with mothers. Mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law will be at odds with each other." The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
54 Jesus also told the crowds, "When you see clouds building in the west, you say, 'Rain is coming.' And it does." And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.
55 "When the wind blows from the south, you say, 'It is going to be scorching hot,' and you are right." And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
56 "What phonies you are! You are great at reading weather patterns in the sky and on the ground, so why can you not figure out the meaning of what is happening right now?" Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
57 "Why do you not use your own good judgment to decide what is right?" Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
58 "If someone is taking you to court, do everything you can to settle things with them on the way there. If you do not, they might drag you before the judge. The judge will hand you to the officer, and the officer will throw you behind bars." When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.
59 "Trust me, you will not get out of there until you have paid back every last cent." I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
