What happens in Numbers 16

Korah, a Levite, leads a rebellion against Moses and Aaron with 250 community leaders. They claim that Moses and Aaron have taken too much power. God dramatically judges the rebels: the earth swallows Korah's household and fire burns up the 250 men. When the people blame Moses the next day, a plague kills 14,700 more before Aaron stops it.

Numbers 16

Korah's Rebellion

Study note

Korah was a Levite who felt he deserved more authority. He joined forces with Dathan and Abiram from the tribe of Reuben and 250 well-known leaders. They accused Moses and Aaron of putting themselves above the rest of the community, claiming that all the people were holy and equal. Moses responded by proposing a test: let God choose who is truly holy.

1 Korah -- a descendant of Izhar, grandson of Kohath, great-grandson of Levi -- teamed up with Dathan, Abiram (both sons of Eliab), and On son of Peleth from the tribe of Reuben. Together they stirred up opposition. Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:
2 They stood against Moses. With them were 250 well-known Israelite men. These were respected leaders and council members. And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown:
3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: why then do you lift up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD? And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?
4 When Moses heard this, he fell facedown on the ground. And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:
5 Then he told Korah and all his supporters, "Tomorrow morning the Lord will make it clear who belongs to him and who is truly holy. He will bring that person close to himself. The one the Lord picks is the one who is holy." And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.
6 "Here is what I want you to do, Korah -- you and all your followers: get fire pans." This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company;
7 "Tomorrow, put burning coals and incense in them before the Lord. Whoever the Lord chooses will be the holy one. It is you sons of Levi who have gone too far!" And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.
8 Moses continued speaking to Korah, "Listen to me, you sons of Levi!" And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:
9 "Is it not enough that the God of Israel has picked you out from the rest of the community? He brought you close to himself to do the work at the Lord's tabernacle and to serve the community." Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?
10 "He has given you and all your fellow Levites this special position close to him. And now you want the priesthood on top of that?" And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?
11 "You and your followers have gathered against the Lord himself! Aaron is just doing what God told him. Why are you complaining about him?" For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

Dathan and Abiram Refuse Moses

Study note

When Moses called for Dathan and Abiram, they refused to come. They sarcastically called Egypt a land flowing with milk and honey and accused Moses of lording over them without delivering on his promises. Moses was deeply angered by their accusations.

12 Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they refused. "We are not coming!" they said. And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:
13 "Was it not enough that you dragged us away from a land flowing with milk and honey just to let us die in the wilderness? Now you want to boss us around too?" Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us?
14 "You certainly have not brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey or given us any fields and vineyards to own. Do you think you can fool everyone? We will not come!" Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.
15 Moses was furious. He said to the Lord, "Do not pay any attention to their offerings. I have not taken so much as a single donkey from any of them, and I have not mistreated any of them." And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

The Test with Incense

Study note

The next day, the 250 men each brought a fire pan with incense and stood before the tent of meeting. The glory of the Lord appeared. God told Moses and Aaron to separate from the community so he could destroy them all, but Moses and Aaron pleaded with God not to punish the whole group for one man's sin.

16 Moses said to Korah. "You and all your followers must show up before the Lord. Come tomorrow. Bring your group and Aaron." And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow:
17 "Each person must bring his fire pan with incense in it and present it to the Lord -- 250 fire pans total. You and Aaron must bring yours as well." And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer.
18 Each man took his fire pan. They filled them with burning coals and incense. They stood at the tent of meeting entrance with Moses and Aaron. And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron.
19 Korah gathered his entire group of supporters to face Moses and Aaron at the entrance of the tent of meeting. At that moment, the Lord's glory appeared to the whole community. And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation.
20 The Lord told Moses and Aaron, And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
21 "Step away from these people so I can destroy them instantly." Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.
22 But Moses and Aaron threw themselves facedown and cried out, "O God, you are the God who gives life to every living being! Will you be angry at the entire community because of what one man did?" And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

The Earth Swallows the Rebels

Study note

God told the people to move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Moses declared that if the ground opened and swallowed these men, everyone would know God had sent him. Immediately the earth split open and swallowed the rebels alive with all their possessions. Fire then consumed the 250 men offering incense.

23 The Lord told Moses, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
24 "Tell everyone to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram." Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram. The Israelite elders followed behind him. And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
26 He warned the community, "Get away from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be destroyed along with them because of all their sins." And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.
27 Everyone moved back from the area around the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came outside and stood in front of their tents with their wives, children, and little ones. So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.
28 Moses said, "Here is how you will know for sure that the Lord sent me to do all these things and that none of it was my own idea:" And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.
29 "If these men die of natural causes like everyone else, then the Lord did not send me." If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.
30 "But the Lord might do something new. The ground might crack open and swallow them. It might take all they own. They might go down alive into the grave. Then you will know these men treated the Lord with scorn." But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.
31 The instant Moses finished speaking, the ground split apart beneath Dathan and Abiram. And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:
32 The earth opened like a mouth and swallowed them. It took their families, everyone linked with Korah, and all their things. And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
33 They plunged alive into the grave along with everything they owned. The ground closed over them, and they vanished from the community. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
34 All the Israelites standing nearby ran for their lives, screaming, "The earth is going to swallow us too!" And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
35 At the same time, fire blazed out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who had been offering incense. And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

The Fire Pans Become a Warning

Study note

God told Eleazar to collect the bronze fire pans from the burned men and hammer them into a covering for the altar. This would serve as a permanent reminder that only descendants of Aaron could burn incense before the Lord.

36 The Lord told Moses, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
37 "Tell Eleazar, Aaron the priest's son, to pull the fire pans out of the ashes. Have him scatter the coals far away. Those fire pans are now holy." Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.
38 "Take the fire pans belonging to the men who sinned and died, and hammer them into thin metal sheets to overlay the altar. They were presented before the Lord and are now holy. They will serve as a visible warning to all Israel." The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
39 Eleazar the priest collected the bronze fire pans left behind by those who had burned up. He had them hammered into sheets to cover the altar. And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:
40 This was meant to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should burn incense before the Lord. Anyone who does will end up like Korah and his followers. Everything happened exactly as the Lord told Moses it would. To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.

The Plague and Aaron's Stand

Study note

Incredibly, the very next day the people blamed Moses and Aaron for killing the Lord's people. God's anger flared and a plague broke out. Moses quickly told Aaron to take his fire pan with incense and run into the crowd. Aaron stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. But 14,700 people had already died.

41 But the very next day, the whole Israelite people turned on Moses and Aaron. They said, "You killed the Lord's people!" But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD.
42 The group gathered against Moses and Aaron. They looked at the tent of meeting. The cloud covered it all at once. The Lord's glory appeared. And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.
43 Moses and Aaron hurried to the front of the tent of meeting. And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation.
44 The Lord told Moses, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
45 "Get away from these people so I can destroy them right now." Moses and Aaron fell facedown. Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them as in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.
46 Moses quickly told Aaron, "Grab your fire pan, fill it with burning coals from the altar, and add incense. Run to the people and make things right for them immediately! The Lord's anger has broken out -- the plague has already started!" And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun.
47 Aaron did exactly as Moses said. He sprinted into the middle of the crowd, where the plague was already spreading. He offered the incense and began making things right for the people. And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people.
48 He positioned himself between those who had already died and those still alive, and the plague was stopped. And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
49 Even so, 14,700 people had already died in the plague, on top of those who died because of Korah. Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah.
50 Aaron then went back to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting. The plague was over. And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the plague was stayed.

How this chapter points to Christ

Numbers 16:1-3 Jude 1:11

Jude warns that false teachers follow 'the rebellion of Korah,' using this event as a timeless example of those who reject God-appointed authority.

Living Numbers 16

Korah wanted a role God had not given Him, and His rebellion destroyed Him and His followers. Discontent with the calling God has given us can lead us to challenge His order. True spiritual leadership is not about power but about humble service in the place God assigns.
