Priestly Responsibilities
Study note
After the people's fear of approaching the tabernacle, God gave clear instructions about who was responsible for what. Aaron and his sons would bear the consequences for any sin connected to the sanctuary. The Levites would serve them but could not touch the holy objects or the altar. Only priests could approach the most holy things.
1 The Lord told Aaron. "You, your sons, and your father's family bear blame for wrongs at the sanctuary. You and your sons alone bear blame for wrongs in the priesthood." And the LORD said unto Aaron, Thou and thy sons and thy father's house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary: and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.
2 "Bring your relatives from the tribe of Levi to work alongside you. They will help you and your sons serve in front of the tent of the testimony." And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee: but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness.
3 "They must serve under your direction and handle the duties of the tent. But they must not get close to the sacred furnishings or the altar, or both they and you will die." And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die.
4 "They must work alongside you and handle all the duties of the tent of meeting. No outsider is allowed to come near you." And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, for all the service of the tabernacle: and a stranger shall not come nigh unto you.
5 "Your job is to guard the sanctuary and the altar. That way my anger won't fall on the people of Israel again." And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.
6 "I have personally selected your fellow Levites from among the Israelites. They are a gift to you, dedicated to the Lord, to carry out the work at the tent of meeting." And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel: to you they are given as a gift for the LORD, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7 "But only you and your sons may perform priestly duties, handling everything at the altar and behind the inner curtain. The priesthood is my gift to you. Any unauthorized person who comes near must be put to death." Therefore thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priest's office for every thing of the altar, and within the veil; and ye shall serve: I have given your priest's office unto you as a service of gift: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
The Priests' Share of the Offerings
Study note
As payment for their service, God gave the priests portions of the most holy offerings, the wave offerings, the best of the oil, wine, and grain, the firstfruits, everything devoted to God, and the firstborn animals. The firstborn of unclean animals and human firstborn were to be redeemed with money instead. This was called a covenant of salt, meaning it was permanent.
8 The Lord also told Aaron, "I am placing you in charge of the offerings presented to me. All the sacred offerings the Israelites bring are given to you and your sons as your permanent share." And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to thy sons, by an ordinance for ever.
9 "From the most holy offerings -- the portions not burned in the fire -- you receive every grain offering, sin offering, and guilt offering they bring me. These are most holy and belong to you and your sons." This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every oblation of theirs, every meat offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs, which they shall render unto me, shall be most holy for thee and for thy sons.
10 "Eat them in a most sanctuary. Every male may eat them. You must treat them as sacred." In the most holy place shalt thou eat it; every male shall eat it: it shall be holy unto thee.
11 "You also receive the wave offerings from the Israelites' gifts. I give them to you, your sons, and your daughters as a permanent share. Anyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat them." And this is thine; the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel: I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in thy house shall eat of it.
12 "I am giving you the best olive oil, the best new wine, and the finest grain. These are the first and best shares that the Israelites offer to the Lord." All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the LORD, them have I given thee.
13 "All the first ripe fruits from their land that they bring to the Lord are yours. Anyone in your household who is clean may eat them." And whatsoever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring unto the LORD, shall be thine; every one that is clean in thine house shall eat of it.
14 "Everything in Israel that has been given to the Lord forever is yours." Every thing devoted in Israel shall be thine.
15 "Every firstborn creature given to the Lord belongs to you. This includes people and animals. But you must always buy back every firstborn son. You must buy back every firstborn of an unclean animal." Every thing that openeth the matrix in all flesh, which they bring unto the LORD, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be thine: nevertheless the firstborn of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem.
16 "Buy them back when they are one month old. The set price is five shekels of silver, using the sanctuary weight of twenty gerahs per shekel." And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou redeem, according to thine estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs.
17 "But do not buy back the firstborn of a cow, sheep, or goat. They are holy. Sprinkle their blood against the altar and burn their fat as a fire offering, producing a pleasing smell to the Lord." But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
18 "The meat from these animals belongs to you, just like the breast of the wave offering and the right thigh." And the flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are thine.
19 "I am giving you all the sacred offerings the Israelites present to the Lord. They belong to you, your sons, and your daughters as a permanent share. This is an everlasting covenant of salt between the Lord and you and your descendants." All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.
The Levites' Inheritance Is the Tithe
Study note
God told Aaron that the priests would have no land inheritance in Canaan. God himself was their inheritance. The Levites would receive the tithe, one-tenth of everything the Israelites produced, as payment for their work at the tent of meeting.
20 The Lord told Aaron, "You will not own any land, and you will have no territory among the Israelites. I am your portion and your inheritance among them." And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.
21 "I am giving the Levites all the tithes collected in Israel as their share. This is in return for the work they do at the tent of meeting." And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
22 "From now on, other Israelites must not approach the tent of meeting, or they will be guilty of sin and will die." Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.
23 "Only the Levites are to work at the tent of meeting and bear responsibility for any offenses related to it. This is a permanent rule for all generations. The Levites will receive no land inheritance among the other Israelites." But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
24 "Instead, I give the Levites the tithes that the Israelites present to the Lord. Therefore I told them they would not inherit any land among the Israelites." But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
The Levites Must Give a Tenth of the Tithe
Study note
The Levites were to give the best tenth of what they received to the priests. This was their offering to the Lord. They could eat the rest anywhere they wished, as it was their wages. By giving the best part, they would avoid guilt and not dishonor the holy offerings.
25 The Lord told Moses, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
26 "Give the Levites these orders. You get tithes from the Israelites. I gave them to you as your share. You must set aside a tenth of those tithes. Give that tenth as a gift to the Lord." Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.
27 "This offering will be credited to you as though it were grain from your own threshing floor or juice from your own winepress." And this your heave offering shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshingfloor, and as the fulness of the winepress.
28 "This is how you will also present an offering to the Lord from every tithe you collect from the Israelites. Give the Lord's portion to Aaron the priest." Thus ye also shall offer an heave offering unto the LORD of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give thereof the LORD's heave offering to Aaron the priest.
29 "Always set aside the very best part of everything given to you. Give that part to the Lord as his offering." Out of all your gifts ye shall offer every heave offering of the LORD, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it.
30 "Tell the Levites: When you give the best part, it will count as if it came from your own threshing floor or winepress." Therefore thou shalt say unto them, When ye have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress.
31 "You and your families may eat the rest of it anywhere you like. It is your wages for the service you perform at the tent of meeting." And ye shall eat it in every place, ye and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation.
32 "As long as you set aside the best portion first, you will not be guilty of sin. But if you dishonor the Israelites' sacred offerings, you will die." And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, when ye have heaved from it the best of it: neither shall ye pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, lest ye die.
