What happens in Numbers 8

Aaron sets up the seven lamps in the tabernacle. Then the Levites are purified and dedicated to the Lord through a special ceremony. God confirms that the Levites serve in place of the firstborn sons of Israel.

Numbers 8

The Seven Lamps

Study note

God told Aaron to set up the seven lamps on the lampstand so they would shine forward and light up the area in front of it. The lampstand was made of hammered gold, crafted exactly as God had shown Moses on the mountain.

1 The Lord told Moses, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2 "Tell Aaron: When you set up the seven lamps, point them so they shine forward. They should light up the area in front of the lampstand." Speak unto Aaron, and say unto him, When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light over against the candlestick.
3 Aaron followed the Lord's instructions and arranged the lamps to shine toward the front of the lampstand. And Aaron did so; he lighted the lamps thereof over against the candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses.
4 The lampstand had been crafted from hammered gold, from its base all the way up to its flower-shaped decorations. It matched perfectly the design the Lord had shown Moses. And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold, unto the shaft thereof, unto the flowers thereof, was beaten work: according unto the pattern which the LORD had shewed Moses, so he made the candlestick.

Purifying the Levites

Study note

Before the Levites could begin their service, they had to be purified. They were sprinkled with water, shaved their entire bodies, and washed their clothes. The people of Israel laid their hands on the Levites, symbolically transferring their service obligation. Then the Levites laid their hands on two bulls used for sacrifice.

5 The Lord told Moses, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
6 "Separate the Levites from the rest of the Israelites and purify them." Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.
7 "Here is how to purify them: Sprinkle purification water on them. Then have them shave their entire bodies and wash their clothes. After that, they will be clean." And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.
8 "Have them bring a young bull along with a grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil. Then take a second young bull for a sin offering." Then let them take a young bullock with his meat offering, even fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt thou take for a sin offering.
9 "Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting and gather all the Israelites together." And thou shalt bring the Levites before the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt gather the whole assembly of the children of Israel together:
10 "Have the Levites stand before the Lord. Then the Israelites must place their hands on the Levites." And thou shalt bring the Levites before the LORD: and the children of Israel shall put their hands upon the Levites:
11 "Aaron must present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering on behalf of the Israelites. This sets them apart for the Lord's work." And Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD for an offering of the children of Israel, that they may execute the service of the LORD.
12 "After that, the Levites must place their hands on the heads of the two bulls. One bull becomes a sin offering and the other a burnt offering to the Lord, to make things right for the Levites." And the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks: and thou shalt offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, unto the LORD, to make an atonement for the Levites.
13 "Position the Levites in front of Aaron and his sons and present them as a wave offering to the Lord." And thou shalt set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them for an offering unto the LORD.
14 "This is how you will separate the Levites from the rest of the Israelites. The Levites will belong to me." Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine.
15 "Once you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they can start their work at the tent of meeting." And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for an offering.

The Levites Belong to God

Study note

God again explained that the Levites were his, taken in place of every firstborn in Israel. They were a gift to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the tabernacle and to protect the rest of Israel from God's judgment. The Levites were purified and began their service.

16 "The Levites are completely dedicated to me from among all the Israelites. I have claimed them for myself as replacements for every firstborn son in Israel." For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel; instead of such as open every womb, even instead of the firstborn of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto me.
17 "Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. I claimed them for myself on the day I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt." For all the firstborn of the children of Israel are mine, both man and beast: on the day that I smote every firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for myself.
18 "So I have taken the Levites as substitutes for all the firstborn Israelites." And I have taken the Levites for all the firstborn of the children of Israel.
19 "I have given the Levites to Aaron and his sons as a gift from the Israelites. The Levites will serve at the tent of meeting for the people. They will make things right for them. That way, no disaster will strike the Israelites when they come near the holy area." And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of the congregation, and to make an atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come nigh unto the sanctuary.
20 Moses, Aaron, and all the Israelites did everything the Lord told them to do about the Levites. And Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel, did to the Levites according unto all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so did the children of Israel unto them.
21 The Levites went through the purification process and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made things right for them so they would be clean. And the Levites were purified, and they washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them as an offering before the LORD; and Aaron made an atonement for them to cleanse them.
22 After that, the Levites started their duties at the tent of meeting under Aaron and his sons. Everything was carried out exactly as the Lord had told Moses. And after that went the Levites in to do their service in the tabernacle of the congregation before Aaron, and before his sons: as the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so did they unto them.

The Age of Service for Levites

Study note

Levites began their tabernacle service at age twenty-five and retired from active duty at age fifty. After retirement, they could still help their fellow Levites with lighter tasks, but they could no longer carry the heavy work loads.

23 The Lord told Moses, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
24 "Here is the rule for the Levites: Men who are twenty-five years old or more must begin serving in the work at the tent of meeting." This is it that belongeth unto the Levites: from twenty and five years old and upward they shall go in to wait upon the service of the tabernacle of the congregation:
25 "When they reach fifty years old, they must step down from their regular duties and no longer do the main work." And from the age of fifty years they shall cease waiting upon the service thereof, and shall serve no more:
26 "They can still assist their fellow Levites at the tent of meeting by helping with guard duty, but they should not perform the regular service tasks. This is how you should organize the Levites' responsibilities." But shall minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of the congregation, to keep the charge, and shall do no service. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charge.

How this chapter points to Christ

Numbers 8:1-4 Revelation 1:12-13

The seven golden lamps in the tabernacle foreshadow the seven golden lampstands among which Christ walks in John's vision, representing God's light among his people.

Living Numbers 8

Before serving God effectively, we must be cleansed and prepared. The lamps shining in the tabernacle remind us that God's presence brings light to darkness. Recognizing seasons of service and rest keeps us from burnout and honors God's design for our lives.
