What happens in Proverbs 11

This chapter is filled with contrasts between the righteous and the wicked, covering topics like honesty in business, the power of integrity, the blessing of generosity, and how entire communities are affected by the character of their people.

Proverbs 11

Honesty and Integrity

Study note

Ancient merchants used balance scales to weigh goods and money. Dishonest merchants would use rigged weights to cheat their customers. God hates this kind of cheating. These proverbs teach that integrity guides the upright safely, while dishonesty destroys the wicked from within.

1 God hates it when someone uses cheating scales in business. But a fair and honest weight makes him truly happy. A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
2 The moment you start acting arrogant, humiliation is right around the corner. But those who are humble will discover wisdom. When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
3 When you are a person of integrity, that integrity becomes your guide. But when you are crooked, your own crookedness will destroy you. The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
4 Your bank account will not help you at all when God's judgment comes, but living right is what rescues you. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
5 A person who does right will find that their path straightens out ahead of them, but the wicked trip over their own wickedness. The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
6 Doing right sets honest people free. But dishonest people get trapped by their own selfish wants. The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
7 The moment a wicked person takes their last breath, everything they hoped for dies too. All the power they counted on vanishes. When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
8 The person who lives right gets pulled out of trouble, and the wicked person ends up in the trouble instead. The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

How Righteousness Affects a Community

Study note

These proverbs show that righteous and wicked people do not just affect themselves. The whole city benefits or suffers based on the character of its people. Gossips destroy trust, while faithful people keep confidences. Without wise advisors, nations fail.

9 A person with no respect for God can ruin their neighbor just by talking. But righteous people know enough to see through it and get away. An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
10 The whole town throws a party when good people are doing well. And when wicked people go down, everyone cheers. When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.
11 Honest people build up their community through their blessings, but the wicked tear it apart with their words. By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
12 Looking down on the person next door shows no wisdom at all. But a person who truly understands knows when to stay quiet. He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
13 Someone who gossips spills every secret they hear, but a person you can trust keeps private things private. A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
14 When there is no one giving wise direction, a whole nation collapses. But when plenty of wise people offer counsel, everything holds together. Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Kindness, Generosity, and Character

Study note

Several of these proverbs deal with generosity and kindness. A gracious woman gains honor. A kind person helps their own soul. A generous person will prosper. The famous image of a gold ring in a pig's nose (verse 22) means that beauty without good sense is wasted and out of place.

15 Promising to pay a stranger's debt is asking for trouble. But staying away from that risk keeps you safe. He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
16 A woman full of grace earns deep respect, and men who work hard hold on to what they have built. A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
17 When you are kind to others, you are doing yourself a favor. When you are cruel, you are the one who gets hurt. The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
18 Wicked people earn rewards that turn out to be empty. But whoever plants seeds of doing right will get a real reward. The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
19 Just as surely as doing right leads to life, chasing after evil is a sprint toward death. As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
20 Twisted hearts disgust the Lord, but he is delighted by people who live with integrity. They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.
21 Count on this: wicked people will face what is coming to them. But the children of the righteous will come through safely. Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.
22 A gorgeous woman who has no common sense is like a gold ring stuck in the snout of a pig. As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
23 What good people long for always leads to something positive, but what the wicked hope for only stirs up more anger. The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

The Rewards of Righteous Living

Study note

The chapter closes with proverbs about the surprising outcomes of generosity and selfishness. Those who give freely end up with more, while those who hoard end up with less. The righteous person's life produces fruit that blesses others, like a tree of life.

24 There are people who give generously and somehow end up with even more than before. And there are people who pinch every penny and somehow end up with less. There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
25 A generous soul will have a rich life. When you do something good for someone else, good things come back to you. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
26 People curse anyone who stores up food when others are hungry. But they pour out blessings on the one who is willing to share. He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
27 Search for ways to do good and you will find people who appreciate you. Search for ways to cause trouble and that is exactly what you will get. He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
28 Anyone who trusts in their money will fall one day. But those who live right will grow strong like a tree full of green leaves. He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
29 If you bring chaos into your own family, your inheritance will amount to nothing but air. The foolish person ends up working for the wise one. He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
30 A life lived right produces results that bring life to others. Whoever has a good effect on people around them is truly wise. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
31 Even good people face results for their deeds on earth. Think about what waits for the wicked! Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.
