What happens in Psalms 112

An acrostic psalm describing the blessings of the person who fears the Lord. It is a companion to Psalm 111 — Psalm 111 describes God's character and Psalm 112 describes the character of God's people.

Psalms 112

Blessed Is the One Who Fears God

Study note

Praise the Lord! Blessed is the person who fears the Lord and delights in his commands. Their descendants will be mighty. Wealth and riches are in their house. Light shines in darkness for the gracious, compassionate, and righteous.

1 Praise the Lord! How happy is the person who deeply respects the Lord and takes real delight in following his commands. Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2 Their children will grow up to be influential in the land. The family line of honest people will be blessed. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3 Their home will be filled with wealth and plenty, and their commitment to doing right will never fade. Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 Even when darkness closes in, light breaks through for those who live with integrity. They are generous, caring, and fair. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5 Things go well for people who share generously and handle their business with honesty. A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

The Righteous Will Not Be Shaken

Study note

The righteous will never be shaken. They are not afraid of bad news because their hearts are secure. They have given freely to the poor. The wicked will see it and be angry, but their desires will come to nothing.

6 They will never be knocked off their feet. People will remember someone who does right for a very long time. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7 Scary news does not shake them up. Their hearts stay calm and steady because they trust in the Lord. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
8 Their hearts are settled and unafraid. When all is said and done, they will see their enemies defeated. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9 They give freely to people who have nothing. Their commitment to doing right will last forever. They will be honored and respected. He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
10 Wicked people see all of this and it makes them furious. They grind their teeth and slowly waste away. Everything the wicked hope for will come to nothing. The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
