What happens in Psalms 125

A Song of Ascents declaring that those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken. God surrounds his people like mountains surround Jerusalem.

Psalms 125

Secure as Mount Zion

Study note

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion — immovable. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people now and forever. The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land given to the righteous.

1 People who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion — it cannot be knocked down and will stand forever. They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.
2 Just as mountains wrap all the way around Jerusalem, the LORD wraps himself around his people now and for all time. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.
3 Wicked rulers will not stay in power over the land God gave his people forever. If they did, good people might be tempted to start doing wrong too. For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.

Peace on Israel

Study note

Do good, Lord, to those who are good and whose hearts are upright. But those who turn to crooked ways will be led away with evildoers. Peace be on Israel.

4 LORD, be good to people who are good and whose hearts are honest. Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.
5 But anyone who twists off onto a crooked path, the LORD will remove them along with all the other troublemakers. Let there be peace over Israel. As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

Living Psalms 125

If you trust in the Lord, you are as secure as Mount Zion — immovable, enduring, and surrounded by God's protection like mountains surround Jerusalem. Your circumstances may shift, but your foundation will not. Root your identity in God's promises, and you will not be shaken.
