What happens in Psalms 128

A Song of Ascents describing the blessings of the person who fears the Lord: a fruitful family, prosperity, and the joy of seeing grandchildren.

Psalms 128

Blessed Is the One Who Fears God

Study note

Blessed are all who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor and be blessed. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in your home. Your children will be like olive shoots around your table.

1 How fortunate is every person who honors the LORD and follows the path he lays out. Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.
2 You will enjoy the good things that come from your own hard work. You will be happy, and life will go well for you. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
3 Your wife will be like a healthy vine full of fruit growing right inside your home. Your children will sit around your table like young olive trees full of life. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
4 This is exactly how God blesses someone who truly honors him. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

Peace on Israel

Study note

May the Lord bless you from Zion. May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all your days and live to see your grandchildren. Peace be on Israel.

5 May the LORD pour out his blessings on you from Zion. May you enjoy seeing Jerusalem do well every day of your life. The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
6 May you live long enough to see your grandchildren. Let there be peace over Israel. Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.

Living Psalms 128

This psalm paints a simple, beautiful picture: a family gathered around a table, fruitful, at peace, and blessed by God. That picture is still available. It does not require perfection — it requires reverence for God and faithfulness in the small things. Seek God in your home, and watch Him bless what you build.
