What happens in Psalms 145

David's psalm of praise — an acrostic psalm and the last psalm attributed to David. It is the only psalm with the title 'praise.' It celebrates God's greatness, compassion, faithfulness, and eternal kingdom.

Psalms 145

Great Is the Lord

Study note

David will exalt God's name forever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise — his greatness is beyond understanding. One generation will tell the next about God's mighty acts. They will celebrate his abundant goodness and joyfully sing of his righteousness.

1 I will lift you up high, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise you and honor your name forever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.
3 The LORD is so great and deserves the highest praise. His greatness has no bottom and no end. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.
4 Parents will tell their children about the wonderful things you have done. Grandchildren will hear about your mighty acts. One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
5 I will talk about how glorious and majestic you are and about the wonderful things you do. I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.
6 People will tell each other about your awesome power, and I will shout about how great you are. And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.
7 Everyone will pour out stories of your incredible goodness and sing about how right and fair you are. They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.

Gracious and Compassionate

Study note

The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. He is good to all and has compassion on all he has made. All God's faithful people will praise him. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.

8 The LORD overflows with kindness and mercy. He is slow to get angry, and his loyal love is huge. The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
9 The LORD is good to everyone. His gentle care covers everything he has made. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
10 Everything you have created will thank you, LORD, and your faithful people will praise you. All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.
11 They will talk about how glorious your kingdom is and speak about your power, They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;
12 so that everyone will know about your mighty acts and the beautiful glory of your kingdom. To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.
13 Your kingdom will never end. You will rule over every generation that ever lives. Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.

God Upholds All Who Fall

Study note

The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. He opens his hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing. He is near to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him. David ends: Let every creature praise his holy name forever and ever.

14 The LORD holds up everyone who is falling and lifts up everyone who is bent down low. The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.
15 Every eye looks to you with hope, and you give them food right when they need it. The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.
16 You open up your hand and give every living thing exactly what it needs. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.
17 The LORD does right in everything and is faithful in everything he does. The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.
18 The LORD stays close to everyone who calls out to him, to everyone who calls out to him honestly. The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
19 He gives those who honor him everything their hearts long for. He hears them cry and rushes to save them. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
20 The LORD protects everyone who loves him, but he will wipe out the wicked. The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.
21 My mouth will be full of praise for the LORD, and let every living thing praise his holy name forever and ever. My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.
