What happens in Psalms 18

A psalm of David celebrating God's dramatic rescue from all his enemies, including King Saul. This is one of the longest psalms and also appears in 2 Samuel 22. It paints a stunning picture of God coming down from heaven to save David.

Psalms 18

David's Love for God

Study note

David opens with a passionate declaration of love for God, describing him as his rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, and stronghold.

1 Lord, you are my strength, and I love you. I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.
2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
3 When I call out to the Lord — and he is worth praising — he saves me from my enemies. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Rescued from Death

Study note

David was surrounded by the ropes of death and the currents of destruction. In his distress he cried out to God, who heard his voice from his temple.

4 Death had me tied up with its ropes. A flood of destruction was crashing over me. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
5 The cords of the grave had wound themselves around me. The snares of death were right in my face. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.
6 In the middle of my crisis I called out to the Lord. I screamed to my God for help. From inside his temple he heard me, and my cry reached his ears. In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

God Comes Down in Power

Study note

In dramatic poetic language, David describes God coming to rescue him. The earth shakes, smoke pours from God's nostrils, he rides on an angel through the sky, and lightning scatters the enemies.

7 At that, the ground shook and quaked. The roots of the mountains trembled because he was filled with anger. Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth.
8 Smoke billowed from his nostrils, and devouring fire blazed from his mouth. White-hot coals shot out from him. There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
9 He tore open the sky and came down. Thick darkness was beneath his feet. He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.
10 He rode on a heavenly being and flew. He streaked across the sky on the wings of the wind. And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
11 He wrapped himself in darkness as his covering — a canopy of dark storm clouds all around him. He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the brightness in front of him, his clouds burst forward with hailstones and bolts of lightning. At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.
13 The Lord's voice thundered from the sky. The Most High let his voice boom out — hailstones and lightning bolts everywhere. The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.
14 He launched his arrows and scattered the enemy in every direction. He hurled enormous bolts of lightning and threw them into complete panic. Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.
15 The ocean floor was laid bare. The very bottom of the world was uncovered at your roar, Lord — at the blast of hot breath from your nose. Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

God Delivers David

Study note

God reaches down and pulls David out of deep waters. He rescues David because he delights in him. David testifies that he has kept God's ways.

16 He stretched his hand down from the heights and grabbed hold of me. He yanked me up out of the deep, churning waters. He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.
17 He pulled me away from my strongest enemy. He saved me from people who hated me and were far too powerful for me. He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.
18 They came at me on my worst day, but the Lord was there holding me up. They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
19 He led me out into a wide-open space. He rescued me because he truly cared about me. He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
20 The Lord paid me back because I did the right thing. He rewarded me because my hands were not guilty. The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
21 I have followed the paths the Lord laid out. I have not turned away from my God to do evil. For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 I kept all his instructions before me. I did not shove his commands aside. For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.
23 I was honest in the way I lived before him, and I guarded myself against falling into sin. I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.
24 Therefore the Lord rewarded me for living right — because he saw that my hands were clean. Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.

God Rewards the Faithful

Study note

God treats people according to their character. He is merciful to the merciful and pure to the pure. He lights David's lamp in the darkness and gives him strength for battle.

25 When someone is loyal to you, you are loyal right back. When someone is honest through and through, you are honest with them. With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;
26 When someone is pure, you treat them with purity. But when someone is twisted, you outsmart them at every turn. With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.
27 You come to the rescue of those who are humble, but you cut the proud down to size. For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.
28 Lord, you are the one who lights my lamp. My God takes my darkness and turns it into daylight. For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
29 With your help I can rush at an entire army. With my God beside me I can jump right over a wall. For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.
30 Everything God does is flawless. The Lord's word has been tested and proven completely reliable. He serves as a shield for everyone who runs to him. As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.
31 Truly, who is God other than the Lord? And who is the unshakable rock except our God? For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?
32 God is the one who straps strength onto me and makes sure my path is clear. It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
33 He gives me feet as sure and quick as a deer's and sets me up on the highest places. He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.
34 He teaches my hands how to fight so that my arms can pull back even a bow made of bronze. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

Victory over Enemies

Study note

God gives David the shield of salvation, makes his feet sure, and trains his hands for battle. David's enemies cry out but find no one to save them.

35 You have handed me the shield of your salvation. Your strong right hand holds me up, and the way you help me has made me great. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.
36 You cleared a wide road under my feet so my ankles would not twist or give out. Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.
37 I ran after my enemies and overtook them. I did not stop until they were finished. I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed.
38 I struck them down so hard they could not stand back up. They crumbled under my feet. I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.
39 You loaded me up with strength for the fight. You forced those who came against me to fall at my feet. For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.
40 You made my enemies run from me, and I wiped out everyone who hated me. Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me.
41 They begged for someone to save them, but nobody appeared. They even cried out to the Lord, but he gave them no answer. They cried, but there was none to save them: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.
42 I crushed them until they were as fine as dust blowing in the wind. I poured them out like mud running down the streets. Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind: I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.
43 You pulled me free from people who were attacking me. You placed me in charge of nations. People I had never met before now serve me. Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
44 The moment they hear about me, they do what I say. Foreigners bow low before me. As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.
45 Foreigners lose their courage and come out trembling from their hiding places. The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.

Praise to the Living God

Study note

David ends with powerful praise: the Lord lives! He is the God who avenges and subdues nations. David will praise God among the nations.

46 The Lord is alive! All praise to my Rock! The God who saves me deserves to be honored above all. The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
47 He is the God who settles the score against those who wronged me and brings the nations under my authority. It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.
48 He pulls me free from my enemies. You lift me high above those who come at me. You snatch me away from violent people. He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
49 That is exactly why I will praise you among the nations, Lord. I will sing songs of praise to your name. Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.
50 He pours out great victories on his king. He shows loyal love to his chosen one — to David and to every generation that follows him, forever. Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.

How this chapter points to Christ

Psalms Psalm 18:49 Romans 15:9

Paul quotes this verse to show that God's salvation was always intended to reach the Gentiles, who would praise God among the nations.

Living Psalms 18

David's celebration of God's rescue reads like an action movie: God split the heavens, rode on the wind, and reached down to pull David from deep waters. Your rescue may not be so dramatic, but it is just as real. Look back on your life and count the times God delivered you. Gratitude fuels faith.
