What happens in Psalms 3

A psalm of David, written when he fled from his son Absalom who tried to steal the throne. Despite being surrounded by enemies, David expresses confidence that God will protect him.

Psalms 3

Surrounded by Enemies

Study note

David cries out to God because his enemies have multiplied. Many people are saying that God will not help him. The word 'Selah' probably means to pause and reflect.

1 Lord, I have so many enemies! People are rising up against me from every direction. LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.
2 So many voices keep saying about me, "God is not going to save him." Selah. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.

God Is My Shield

Study note

Despite the danger, David declares that God is his shield and his source of honor. He testifies that he can sleep peacefully because God sustains him.

3 But you, Lord, wrap around me like a shield. You are the one who gives me honor and helps me hold my head high. But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
4 I called out to the Lord with everything I had, and he answered me from his holy mountain. Selah. I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.
5 I was able to lie down and fall asleep, and I woke up safely — all because the Lord was watching over me. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
6 Even if tens of thousands of people surround me on every side, I will not let fear take hold of me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.

A Prayer for Rescue

Study note

David calls on God to rise up and save him. The psalm ends with a declaration that salvation belongs to God alone.

7 Get up, Lord! Come and save me, my God! You have slapped every enemy across the jaw. You have smashed the teeth of those who do evil. Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.
8 Rescue comes from the Lord alone. Pour out your blessing on your people. Selah. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

Living Psalms 3

David wrote this while fleeing his own son. Even in the most painful betrayals, God is a shield around you. You can lie down and sleep in peace because God sustains you. Whatever threatens you today, you are not alone — God stands between you and your fear.
