Psalms 47

Shout to God with Joy

Study note

All peoples are called to clap and shout because God Most High is awesome — a great King over all the earth. God has gone up with a shout and the sound of a trumpet.

1 Everybody, clap your hands! Shout to God with a voice bursting with joy! O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
2 The Lord Most High fills us with awe — he is the great King over the whole world. For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.
3 He brought nations under our feet and put peoples beneath us. He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
4 He handpicked the land we would inherit — the treasure of Jacob, whom he loves. Selah. He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.
5 God has gone up with a mighty shout, the Lord with the blast of a trumpet. God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

God Is King of All the Earth

Study note

Sing praises to God, for he is King of all the earth. He reigns over the nations from his holy throne. He is greatly exalted.

6 Sing praises to God — sing praises! Sing praises to our King — sing praises! Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
7 God is the King over the entire earth. Pour out a psalm of praise to him. For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.
8 God rules over every nation. God sits on his holy throne. God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.
9 The leaders of the nations have gathered with the people of the God of Abraham, because every ruler on earth belongs to God. He is lifted up far above everything. The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.
