What happens in Psalms 50

A psalm of Asaph. God himself speaks as a judge, calling heaven and earth as witnesses. He challenges empty religious rituals and calls for genuine thanksgiving and obedience.

Psalms 50

God Comes as Judge

Study note

The mighty God summons the earth. He shines from Zion with fire and storm around him. He calls heaven and earth to witness as he judges his people.

1 The Mighty One — God, the Lord — has spoken and called out to the entire earth, from where the sun rises to where it sets. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
2 From Zion, the most beautiful place on earth, God shines with dazzling light. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.
3 Our God is coming, and he will not stay quiet. A blazing fire goes ahead of him, and a violent storm swirls all around him. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.
4 He calls out to the sky above and to the earth below to witness as he judges his people. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.
5 "Bring my faithful ones to me — the people who sealed their promise to me through sacrifice." Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
6 The heavens announce that he is just, because God himself is the judge. Selah. And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.

God Does Not Need Sacrifices

Study note

God tells Israel he does not need their animal sacrifices — he owns every animal on a thousand hills. Instead, he wants thanksgiving, fulfillment of vows, and for them to call on him in trouble.

7 "Pay attention, my people — I have something to say. Israel, I am going to lay out the truth about you. I am God — your God." Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.
8 "I am not scolding you about your sacrifices or the burnt offerings you keep bringing me." I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.
9 "I don't need a bull from your barn or goats from your pens." I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.
10 "Every wild animal in the forest already belongs to me. So do the cattle on a thousand hills." For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.
11 "I know every bird up in the mountains. Every creature roaming the fields is mine." I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
12 "If I were hungry, I wouldn't come asking you for food — the world and everything in it already belongs to me." If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
13 "Do you truly think I eat the meat of bulls or drink the blood of goats?" Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14 "What I want is for you to bring me a thankful heart as your offering. Follow through on the promises you made to the Most High." Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:
15 "And when trouble comes, call out to me. I will rescue you, and you will bring me honor." And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

A Warning to the Wicked

Study note

God rebukes the wicked who recite his laws but hate his discipline. They sit and slander their own brothers. God will no longer be silent. Whoever offers true praise honors God.

16 "But to the person who lives in wickedness, God says: Who gave you the right to quote my laws or talk about my promises?" But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
17 "You despise everything I try to teach you. You take my words and throw them over your shoulder." Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
18 "The moment you spot a thief, you team up with him. You hang around with people who cheat on their spouses." When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.
19 "Your mouth is a factory for evil, and your tongue is always spinning out lies." Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.
20 "You sit around and trash-talk your own brother. You spread lies about your own mother's son." Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.
21 "You kept doing all this, and I said nothing. So you assumed I was just like you. But now I am confronting you — I am laying the evidence out before your face." These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
22 "Think about this carefully, all of you who have forgotten God. If you don't, I will tear you to pieces, and no one will be left to save you." Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
23 "The person who brings a thankful heart as their offering — that is the one who truly honors me. And to the person who stays on the right path, I will show the saving power of God." Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.
