What happens in Psalms 52

A maskil of David, written when Doeg the Edomite told Saul that David had gone to Ahimelech the priest. David confronts a powerful person who boasts about evil and trusts in wealth instead of God.

Psalms 52

The Boasting Tongue

Study note

David confronts a mighty man who boasts about his evil deeds. His tongue is like a sharp razor, cutting with deceit. He loves evil more than good.

1 Why do you brag about the evil you do, you powerful person? God's loyal love never stops — it lasts all day long. Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
2 Your tongue is always scheming to destroy — sharp as a razor, always cutting with lies. Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
3 You prefer evil over good. You would rather lie than speak the truth. Selah. Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
4 You love every word that tears people down, you tongue full of deception! Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

God Will Uproot the Wicked

Study note

God will destroy this person forever — snatching him from his tent and uprooting him from the land of the living. The righteous will see it and be amazed.

5 Therefore God will rip you out for good. He will grab you and yank you from your home. He will pull you up by the roots right out of the land of the living. Selah. God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
6 Those who live right will watch it happen and be filled with awe. Then they will laugh and say, The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:
7 "Look at the person who refused to make God his safe place. Instead, he put his confidence in his pile of money and got his strength from doing evil." Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

Trust in God's Faithful Love

Study note

In contrast, David is like a flourishing olive tree in God's house. He trusts in God's faithful love forever and will praise God among his people.

8 But I am like a thriving olive tree growing in the house of God. I rely on God's loyal love forever and ever. But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
9 I will thank you forever for everything you have done. In the company of your faithful people, I will place my hope in your name — because your name is good. I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.

Living Psalms 52

Doeg used his tongue as a weapon and boasted in his evil deeds. But David compared himself to an olive tree flourishing in God's house. Your words and loyalties define you. Choose to be rooted in God's love rather than in schemes and slander. Faithfulness always outlasts arrogance.
