What happens in Psalms 54

A maskil of David, written when the Ziphites told Saul where David was hiding. Despite the danger from strangers who sought to kill him, David trusts that God will save him.

Psalms 54

Save Me by Your Name

Study note

David cries out for God to save him and defend him. Strangers have risen up against him and ruthless people seek his life without any regard for God.

1 God, come to my rescue by the power of your name. Use your strength to stand up for me. Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
2 God, listen to my prayer. Open your ears to the words I'm saying. Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 Outsiders have risen up against me, and violent people are out to take my life. They give no thought to God at all. Selah. For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.

God Is My Helper

Study note

David declares that God is his helper and the one who sustains his life. He will freely sacrifice to God and praise his name because God has delivered him from every trouble.

4 But look — God is my helper. The Lord is the one who keeps me going. Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5 He will turn the evil my enemies planned right back on them. Wipe them out because you are faithful to your word. He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6 I will gladly bring you an offering. I will praise your name, Lord, because it is good. I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
7 He has pulled me out of every kind of trouble, and my eyes have seen my enemies defeated. For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Living Psalms 54

The Ziphites betrayed David to Saul, but David turned to God rather than to revenge. When people you counted on let you down, God remains your helper. He sustains your life. Respond to his faithfulness not with bitterness toward others but with willing gratitude toward him.
