What happens in Psalms 62

A psalm of David for Jeduthun. David declares that his soul finds rest in God alone. Twice he says 'he alone' is his rock and salvation. Power and love both belong to God.

Psalms 62

Rest in God Alone

Study note

David's soul waits in silence for God alone. He is David's rock and salvation and fortress. David will not be greatly shaken. His enemies try to knock him down like a leaning wall.

1 My soul finds real rest only in God. He is the only one my salvation comes from. Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.
2 He alone is the rock I stand on, the one who rescues me. He is my high place of safety — I will not be seriously shaken. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.
3 How long will all of you keep attacking one person? You will all be crushed — you are as unstable as a leaning wall or a fence about to collapse. How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.
4 All they care about is dragging him down from his high place. They enjoy telling lies. On the outside they say nice things, but on the inside they are cursing. Selah. They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.

Trust God, Not Wealth

Study note

David tells his soul to find rest in God alone. He calls on people to pour out their hearts before God, who is a refuge for us. Do not trust in oppression or set your heart on growing riches.

5 My soul, find your quiet rest in God alone. He is the one all my hope is built on. My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
6 He alone is the rock beneath me and the one who saves me. He is my fortress — I will not be shaken. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
7 Everything I rely on — my rescue and my reputation — all of it rests on God. My mighty rock and my hiding place are found in him. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
8 Rely on him every moment, you people. Open up your hearts and pour them out in front of him. God is our hiding place. Selah. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

God Has Spoken

Study note

All people are like a breath. On the scales they weigh nothing. God has spoken two things clearly: power belongs to God, and faithful love belongs to God. He will reward each person according to what they have done.

9 Regular people are nothing but a puff of air. Important people are just an illusion. Put them all on a scale together, and they weigh less than a single breath. Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.
10 Don't count on cheating others to get ahead. Don't pin your hopes on things you have stolen. And if your bank account starts growing, don't let your heart get attached to it. Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
11 God said it once, and I heard it clearly a second time: all power belongs to God. God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
12 And loyal love belongs to you as well, Lord. You pay every person back according to what they have done. Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.
