God's Faithful Love Forever
Study note
Ethan will sing of God's faithful love forever. God made a covenant with David, promising to establish his throne for all generations.
1 I will sing about the Lord's never-ending love forever! With every breath, I will tell one generation after another how faithful you are. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
2 Here is what I believe: your loyal love stands on a foundation that will last forever. Your faithfulness is woven into the very fabric of the sky. For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.
3 God said, "I have sealed a covenant with the one I chose. I gave my solemn word to David, my servant:" I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,
4 "Your family line will go on forever. I will keep your throne standing strong through every generation." Selah. Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.
God's Power in Heaven and Earth
Study note
The heavens praise God's wonders. Who in the skies can compare to the Lord? He rules the raging sea and crushed Rahab. The heavens and earth belong to him. Blessed are those who walk in the light of his face.
5 Lord, the heavens themselves celebrate your miracles. Your faithfulness shines in the gathering of your holy ones. And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.
6 Who up in the sky could ever be compared to the Lord? Which of the heavenly beings is anything like him? For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?
7 God fills his holy council with deep awe. He is far more impressive than anyone around him. God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
8 Lord God who commands heaven's armies, who has power like yours? Lord, your faithfulness wraps around you like a cloak. O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?
9 You are the master of the roaring ocean. When its waves leap up, you settle them down. Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.
10 You crushed Rahab like a body on the ground. With your powerful arm, you flung your enemies in every direction. Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.
11 The heavens belong to you. The earth is yours too. You designed the world and everything that fills it. The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.
12 You shaped the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon burst into joyful singing at the sound of your name. The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.
13 What a powerful arm you have! Your hand is mighty. Your right hand is raised high. Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.
14 Everything you do stands on a base of fairness and justice. Loyal love and truth walk ahead of you wherever you go. Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
15 How happy are the people who have learned to celebrate you! Lord, they live their lives surrounded by the light of your face. Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.
16 Your name makes them glad all day long, and your goodness lifts them up. In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.
17 You are the pride behind their strength. Because you smile on us, our heads are held high. For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.
18 Our protector belongs to the Lord. Our king belongs to the Holy One of Israel. For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.
God's Covenant with David
Study note
God chose David and anointed him. He promised that David's line would endure forever. Even if his descendants sin, God will discipline them but never take away his love. David's throne will last like the sun and moon.
19 Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful followers. You said, "I have placed my help on a mighty warrior. I have lifted up someone I chose from among the people." Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
20 "I found David, my servant. I poured my sacred oil on his head to set him apart." I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
21 "My hand will always be there for him, and my arm will make him strong." With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.
22 "No enemy will force him to pay tribute, and no wicked person will push him around." The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
23 "I will smash his enemies before him. Anyone who hates him, I will strike down." And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.
24 "My faithfulness and loyal love will stay by his side. Through my name, he will stand tall." But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
25 "I will stretch his rule to the sea and his authority all the way to the great rivers." I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
26 "He will cry out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the Rock who saves me.'" He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
27 "I will also make him my firstborn son, the most honored king on earth." Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
28 "My loyal love for him will never end, and the covenant I made with him will always hold." My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.
29 "His family line will last forever, and his throne will stand as long as the sky above." His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
30 "But if his children walk away from my instructions and stop following my rules," If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;
31 "if they break the standards I set and ignore my commands," If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;
32 "then I will use a rod to correct their disobedience and lashes to deal with their guilt." Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
33 "But I will never take my loyal love away from him or break the promise I made." Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
34 "I will not go back on my covenant or take back a single word I have spoken." My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
35 "I have made one unbreakable oath on my own holiness. I will never lie to David." Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
36 "His descendants will continue forever. His throne will shine before me like the sun." His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.
37 "It will remain as steady as the moon, that faithful witness hanging in the sky." Selah. It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
The Covenant Seems Broken
Study note
But now God has rejected and been angry with his anointed. He has broken through the walls, humiliated the king, and let enemies celebrate. How long will this last?
38 But now you have pushed him away and refused him. You have turned your anger on the one you anointed. But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.
39 You have torn up the covenant with your servant and thrown his crown in the dirt. Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
40 You have knocked down every one of his walls and left his strong towers in ruins. Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin.
41 Everyone who passes by takes whatever they want from him. He has become a joke to the people next door. All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.
42 You have given his enemies the upper hand. You have made every one of them celebrate. Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.
43 You have dulled the blade of his sword and refused to back him up when he fights. Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle.
44 You have taken away his glory and tossed his throne to the ground. Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.
45 You cut his young years short and piled shame on top of him. Selah. The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.
Remember How Short Life Is
Study note
Ethan asks how long God will hide and let his anger burn. He reminds God how short human life is and where God's former great love has gone. The psalm ends with a doxology closing Book 3: Praise be to the Lord forever. Amen and Amen.
46 How much longer, Lord? Will you stay hidden from us forever? How long will your anger keep burning like a fire? How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?
47 Remember how short my life truly is. Did you create everyone on earth only to watch them fade away? Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?
48 Is there anyone alive who will never face death? Can any person escape the grip of the grave? Selah. What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.
49 Lord, where is the loyal love you used to show -- the love you swore to David with a faithful promise? Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?
50 Remember, Lord, how your servants are being insulted. I carry the mockery of many nations deep in my heart. Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;
51 Your enemies have thrown insults, Lord. They have mocked your anointed one at every turn. Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.
52 Praise belongs to the Lord forever! Amen and Amen. Blessed be the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen.
