What happens in Psalms 91

One of the most beloved psalms about God's protection. The person who lives in the shelter of the Most High will be safe from plague, danger, and fear. Angels will guard them. Satan quoted this psalm when tempting Jesus.

Psalms 91

Safe in God's Shelter

Study note

Those who dwell in God's secret place will rest under his shadow. God is a refuge and fortress. He covers us with his feathers. We need not fear terrors by night or arrows by day. Even if thousands fall around us, we will be safe.

1 Whoever dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3 He is the one who will pull you out of the trapper's snare and keep you safe from any deadly sickness. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He will tuck you under his feathers, and beneath his wings you will be safe. His faithfulness surrounds you like a sturdy shield and a wall of protection. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 You will have no reason to be scared of dangers that come at night or attacks that fly at you during the day, Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 or sickness that creeps around in the dark, or the disease that strikes when the sun is at its highest. Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand people may fall on one side of you and ten thousand on the other, but nothing will touch you. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 You will simply watch with your own eyes and see what happens to those who do wrong. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Angels Will Guard You

Study note

Because you have made the Lord your dwelling, no harm will come near your tent. God will command his angels to guard you in all your ways. You will trample lions and snakes.

9 Because you have chosen the Lord as your safe place -- the Most High as the one you run to -- Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
10 nothing harmful will reach you, and no disaster will get anywhere near where you live. There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 He will give his angels special orders about you -- to guard you no matter where you go. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They will lift you up in their hands so that your foot will not hit a single stone. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 You will walk right over lions and cobras. You will step on fierce young lions and crush serpents under your feet. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

God's Promise

Study note

God speaks directly: Because this person loves me, I will rescue them. When they call, I will answer. I will be with them in trouble, deliver them, honor them, and satisfy them with long life.

14 God says, "Because this person holds tight to me with love, I will pull them to safety. I will keep them secure because they know who I am." Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 "Whenever they call out to me, I will be there with an answer. I will stay close to them through hard times. I will bring them through it and give them a place of honor." He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 "I will give them a long and satisfying life, and I will let them see my saving power." With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

How this chapter points to Christ

Psalms Psalm 91:11-12 Matthew 4:6; Luke 4:10-11

Satan quoted these verses when tempting Jesus to throw himself from the temple, misapplying the promise of angelic protection. Jesus responded by refusing to test God.

Living Psalms 91

This psalm is a fortress of comfort. When fear creeps in — fear of disaster, disease, or danger — plant yourself in these promises. God does not promise that nothing bad will ever happen, but He promises to be with you through it all. A thousand may fall, but you will not be abandoned.
