What happens in Revelation 4

John is called up through an open door into heaven, where he witnesses the magnificent throne room of God surrounded by twenty-four elders and four living creatures offering ceaseless worship.

Revelation 4

The Heavenly Throne Room

Study note

John is invited through an open door in heaven and immediately finds himself in the Spirit before God's throne. The one seated on the throne radiates the brilliance of precious stones, surrounded by a rainbow of emerald. Twenty-four elders sit on thrones in white clothing with golden crowns, and seven lamps burn before the throne, representing the seven Spirits of God. A crystal sea stretches before the throne, and four living creatures covered with eyes surround it.

1 After this I looked up, and there was a door standing open in heaven! The first voice I had heard -- the one that sounded like a trumpet -- spoke to me again: "Come up here, and I will show you what is going to happen next." After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
2 Instantly, the Spirit took hold of me. There in front of me was a throne set up in heaven, and someone was sitting on it. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.
3 The one on the throne sparkled like brilliant jewels -- jasper and carnelian. A rainbow that glowed like an emerald arched all around the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
4 Circling the throne were twenty-four smaller thrones. Sitting on them were twenty-four elders dressed in white, wearing golden crowns on their heads. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumbling sounds, and crashes of thunder. Seven blazing torches burned in front of the throne -- these are the seven Spirits of God. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
6 Spread out in front of the throne was something like a sea made of glass, as clear as crystal. Gathered around the center of the throne were four living creatures covered with eyes on every side -- front and back. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

Ceaseless Worship of the Creator

Study note

The four living creatures, resembling a lion, calf, man, and eagle, worship God without ceasing, declaring his holiness and eternal nature. In response, the twenty-four elders fall before the throne, cast their crowns down, and proclaim God's worthiness to receive glory, honor, and power as the Creator of all things.

7 The first creature looked like a lion. The second looked like an ox. The third had a face like a human. The fourth looked like an eagle in flight. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
8 Each of these four creatures had six wings, and every surface was covered with eyes -- inside and out. Without ever stopping, day and night, they kept saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty -- he who was, and is, and is coming." And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
9 The living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to the one on the throne. He is the one who lives forever and ever. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
10 the twenty-four elders dropped to the ground before him. They worshiped the one who lives forever and ever. They took off their crowns and laid them down in front of the throne, saying, The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory, honor, and power. You created everything that exists. It all came into being because you wanted it to." Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

How this chapter points to Christ

Revelation 4:6-8 Ezekiel 1:5-10

The four living creatures with multiple faces directly parallel Ezekiel's vision of the four living beings near the river Chebar, each having the face of a man, lion, ox, and eagle.

Revelation 4:8 Isaiah 6:2-3

The ceaseless 'Holy, holy, holy' echoes the seraphim's cry in Isaiah's temple vision, connecting heaven's worship across the ages and affirming God's unchanging holiness.

Revelation 4:2-3 Ezekiel 1:26-28

The throne vision with brilliant light and a surrounding rainbow recalls Ezekiel's description of the glory of the Lord appearing like brilliant gems on a throne with a rainbow radiance.

Living Revelation 4

This vision of heaven's throne room reorients our perspective from earthly struggles to eternal realities. When the circumstances of life seem chaotic and out of control, heaven reveals that God sits firmly on his throne, worthy of all worship. Like the elders casting their crowns, we are invited to lay down our achievements and ambitions before the one who created all things, finding our purpose in worshiping him.
