How to Hear God Speak Through Scripture — A Five-Step Practice for Two-Way Prayer
Most of us have been taught how to talk to God. Almost none of us have been taught how to listen. Here is the practice.
I have prayed prayers and heard nothing back. You probably have too. You knelt down with something heavy on your chest — a decision, a fear, a person you love who was slipping — and you said the words honestly, and then you waited, and the silence afterward felt like the answer.
If that is what prayer has felt like, I want to say something carefully: the silence was almost certainly not God refusing to speak. It was, much more often, the missing half of a conversation we were never taught to have. Most of us learned how to talk to God. Almost none of us were taught how to listen for Him. We came to prayer like a phone call where we said our piece and hung up — and then wondered why we never heard His voice.
Jesus said it simply: "My sheep hear my voice" (John 10:27). Not some sheep. Not special sheep. The hearing is the normal experience of belonging to Him. The question is not whether God speaks. The question is whether we know how to listen. This article is the practice — five steps, all rooted in Scripture, that turn prayer into the two-way conversation it was always meant to be.
Scripture is the primary place God still speaks
Before any practice, this premise: the most reliable way God speaks today is through the Bible He has already given. Hebrews 1:1-2 says God spoke "at sundry times and in divers manners" through prophets, but in these last days He has spoken "unto us by his Son" — and the record of that speaking, plus everything that came before, is what you hold in your hands when you open Scripture.
Hebrews 4:12 calls the word "quick and powerful." Quick in older English means living. The Bible is not a transcript of what God once said. It is a living instrument He still uses. Paul told Timothy that "all scripture is given by inspiration of God" — literally, God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). When you read a verse, you are receiving His breath, His voice, His mind, in the form He chose to make permanent.
This matters because two-way prayer is not, primarily, about waiting for new revelation. It is about learning to hear what God has already said and trusting Him to apply it to your specific situation through His Spirit. Most of the time when God speaks to you, the words will already be in your Bible. The Spirit's job is to make them land.

The five-step prayer-and-Scripture loop
This is the simplest framework I know for two-way prayer. You can do it in fifteen minutes. You can also do it for an hour. The point is not the duration but the order — each step prepares the soul for the next.
Pray — ask God to speak before you read
Before your eyes touch the page, ask. The prayer can be one sentence: "Lord, speak to me through your word this morning. Give me ears to hear." Psalm 119:18 is older than that and works just as well: "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law." The point is that you arrive at Scripture as a listener, not a reader. The same passage approached two different ways will yield two different mornings.
Read — slowly, expecting to hear
Read a paragraph or a chapter — not a verse — slowly enough that you actually hear the words. The pace matters. Most of us read Scripture the way we scan email, and email-pace reading produces email-quality engagement. Read like you would read a letter from someone you love who has died and left it for you. Because that, in some sense, is exactly what it is — except the author is alive, and He is sitting beside you while you read.
Pay attention to the verse that lingers. The line that catches your eye, that won't quite let you move on, that seems to land harder than the others. That is often the Spirit underlining something. Don't rush past it.
Listen — sit with what landed
This is the step most people skip. After you read, stop. Don't immediately move to the next thing. Sit in silence with the verse that landed, and ask: "Lord, what are you saying to me through this?" Then wait. The waiting may feel uncomfortable for the first week — we are not used to silence — but the silence is where the still small voice has room to be heard.
D&C 8:2-3 describes the mechanism: God speaks "in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost." Listen for both. Mind: a thought that clarifies, a connection between this verse and your actual life, a conviction that comes with a softening. Heart: a settled peace, a quiet warming, a sense that this is for you. When mind and heart both bear witness, you are likely hearing God.
Record — write down what you heard
Write it down. Even if it is one sentence. Even if you are not sure. The act of writing forces you to articulate the impression — and an impression that cannot survive being articulated probably wasn't a strong impression to begin with. More importantly, written records are how you build evidence over time. The verse you wrote down in March will mean something different when you read it again in November. You will see God's voice forming a pattern in your life only if you have a record of the moments.
I keep mine in the Covenant Path journal beside the verse itself, so that each impression stays anchored to the Scripture that produced it. After a few months, you will have a personal map of how God has been speaking to you — which is one of the most valuable things a believer can own.
Respond — do something with what you heard
Hearing God is not the goal. Obedience is the goal. Hearing without responding is what James calls being a hearer of the word but not a doer (James 1:22). It also breaks the loop. If God speaks and you do not respond, the next morning's listening will be quieter. If God speaks and you obey — even in something small — the next morning's hearing will be louder.
Ask yourself: What is the one thing this verse calls me to do today? Make a phone call. Forgive someone. Confess something. Stop something. Start something. The response can be tiny. The fidelity is what matters. Jesus said in John 7:17, "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God." Doing precedes deeper knowing. The disciples heard the most because they obeyed the most.
Pray. Read. Listen. Record. Respond. Five steps in fifteen minutes. Done daily, this is the difference between a Bible you read and a God who speaks to you through it.
"Is this God or just my own thoughts?" — five tests
Every honest believer asks this question. The fear of mistaking your own mind for God's voice is, in a strange way, a sign of spiritual seriousness — only people who care about hearing God correctly worry about hearing wrong. Scripture gives us five tests. None of them works alone. Together, they are reliable.
Does it agree with Scripture?
God will not contradict His written word. Galatians 1:8 is unsparing: even if "we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel," it is wrong. Isaiah 8:20 — "to the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." If the impression you received contradicts what the Bible plainly teaches, it is not God. Full stop. This test alone resolves more discernment questions than the other four combined.
Does it bear the character of God?
Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. God's voice carries that fragrance. Even when His message is hard — a conviction of sin, a call to costly obedience — it will arrive with the gravity and tenderness of a Father, not the urgency of a salesman. If the impression flatters your pride, urges haste, makes you anxious to act, or carries an undercurrent of fear or self-importance, it is probably not Him.
Does it call you toward Christ?
1 Corinthians 12:3 says no one speaking by the Spirit of God says Jesus is accursed, and no one can say Jesus is Lord but by the Holy Ghost. The Spirit's signature is to magnify Christ — to call you toward repentance, toward faith, toward dependence on Him, toward obedience to His commands, toward the people He loves. If the impression you received pulls you away from Jesus — toward self-glory, toward bitterness, toward isolation, toward hidden sin — it is not the same Spirit who inspired the Scripture in front of you.
Does mature counsel confirm it?
Proverbs 11:14 says, "in the multitude of counsellers there is safety." The "private revelation that no one else gets to confirm" is one of the most reliable warning signs in church history. Genuine impressions from God can usually survive being shared with a wise, mature believer who knows you and the Scriptures. If your conviction must stay secret to remain alive, that is information about the conviction. Bring it into the light. The Spirit is not afraid of community.
Does it produce settled peace, even when costly?
Isaiah 32:17 — "the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever." Philippians 4:7 — "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds." A genuine word from God will often demand something hard, but it will not leave you panicked. It will leave you weighted, sober, sometimes weeping — but settled. If you find yourself frantic, anxious, urgent, that fevered quality is rarely from Him. The Spirit hurries no one.
Run the impression through all five. The more confidently it passes, the more likely it is His voice. And in the cases where you remain genuinely unsure, do nothing irreversible until you are. God is patient. He repeats Himself. He is not in a hurry, and He does not punish the cautious.
What the Book of Mormon adds — the mechanism of revelation
The Bible names the principle: God speaks. The Book of Mormon names the mechanism: God speaks in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost. If you read only one of the two, you may know that God speaks but never quite know how. Reading both gives you the doctrine and the diagnostic.
The most important text on hearing God in the Restoration scriptures is D&C 8:2-3, given to Oliver Cowdery as he was learning to receive revelation himself: "Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation." Two witnesses, working together — mind and heart. This is why the listening step in the loop above asks you to attend to both. Mind alone is intellect, easy to manufacture. Heart alone is feeling, easy to misread. When mind and heart agree on the meaning of a verse, and both bear the marks of the Spirit's character, you are very likely hearing God.
D&C 9:8 then gives the practical method, almost identical to the loop above: "You must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right." Study the Scripture. Form a tentative answer. Bring the answer back to God in prayer. Wait for the witness — the burning, the settled rightness, the inner peace. This is exactly what the disciples on the road to Emmaus described in Luke 24:32: "Did not our heart burn within us, while he... opened to us the scriptures?" The same mechanism, named in two scriptures separated by two thousand years.
The Book of Mormon's first-person accounts of hearing God are also worth your time. Enos prayed all day and into the night until "there came a voice unto me, saying, Enos, thy sins are forgiven thee" (Enos 1:5) — the voice arrived when the cry beneath it became completely honest. Helaman 5:30 describes the voice itself: "a still voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul." Quiet, but not weak. A whisper that reaches the soul. Mild, but unmistakable.
And Nephi gives the central instruction in 2 Nephi 32:3 — "Feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do." Feast. Not nibble. Not glance at. Sit at the table of Scripture as if it were a meal. The promise is sweeping: the words of Christ will tell you all things what to do. If you want to hear God on a specific decision this week, the first place to listen is the Bible chapter you are already reading. The Book of Mormon's own witness is that this is enough.

What to do when God seems silent
Sometimes the loop goes quiet. You pray, you read, you listen — and nothing. No verse lands. No impression comes. The page feels closed and the room feels empty. If that is your experience, before any technique, hear this: the silence is almost never silence on God's side. Isaiah 59:1 — "Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear." He is still speaking. Several common reasons make Him harder to hear:
- Unresolved sin. Isaiah 59:2 finishes the thought — "your iniquities have separated between you and your God." Sometimes the silence is a closed door we shut and forgot about. The most fruitful prayer in this season is honest confession. Open the door again.
- Unobeyed instruction. John 7:17 — "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine." God often refuses to give the next instruction until the previous one has been obeyed. If He told you something three weeks ago and you have not done it, the silence may be Him patiently waiting.
- Too much noise. 1 Kings 19:11-12 puts God's voice on the other side of wind, earthquake, and fire. Most modern lives are wind, earthquake, and fire on autoplay. If you cannot remember the last time you sat in genuine silence, that is probably the variable to change first.
- Numbness. 1 Nephi 17:45 describes Nephi's brothers as "past feeling, that ye could not feel his words." God was speaking. They could not feel it. The honest first prayer in that season is, "Lord, give me back my feeling."
- A faith season, not a feelings season. Habakkuk 2:3 — "The vision is yet for an appointed time... though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come." Sometimes God is intentionally training you to walk by faith rather than by feeling. The dryness is not abandonment. It is the gym.
In every case, the response is the same: keep showing up. Open the Bible the next morning anyway. Pray the prayer of Psalm 119:18 anyway. Faithfulness in silence is what produces hearing in the next season. The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked seven miles with their hearts cold before they realized Jesus had been speaking the whole way (Luke 24:13-32). Some of God's clearest words come retroactively, after we kept walking through the part where we couldn't hear.
What a first session can look like
It is 6:30 in the morning. You are sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, your Bible, and a notebook. You have fifteen minutes before the day pulls you in.
You begin by praying, out loud or in your head: "Lord, open my eyes. Speak to me through your word. I want to hear you." One sentence. You mean it.
You open to Psalm 23 — a chapter you have read a hundred times. You read slowly, line by line. "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." You keep reading. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me."
That line lingers. For thou art with me. You have been wrestling for a week with whether to take a difficult step at work — a conversation you have been avoiding. The line catches you. For thou art with me. Not before me, working it out. Not after me, helping me recover. With me. In it.
You stop. You sit in silence for a minute. You ask, "Lord, what are you saying to me through this?" You wait. A thought comes, slowly: The reason you have been avoiding the conversation is that you have been imagining it without me. Have it with me. The thought lines up with Scripture. It carries the character of God — sober, kind, loving, calling you toward what is right. It produces a settled peace. You write it down. Below the verse you write: "Have the conversation. He'll be in it."
You close in prayer: "Lord, I'll do this. Today. Help me." You stand up. You go have the conversation. It is hard. It also goes better than you imagined, because for the first time in a week you are walking into it with someone next to you.
That is what hearing God through Scripture looks like on a normal Tuesday. Not a thunderclap. Not a vision. A line, a stillness, a thought, an obedience. Done daily, this builds the kind of life Jesus called sheep who hear his voice and follow him.
He is not silent toward you
If you have been afraid that God does not speak to people like you — too distracted, too sinful, too ordinary, too far gone — Mormon 9:21 settles it: "This promise is unto all, even unto the ends of the earth." No exclusions. No tier of believers who get to hear and another who has to make do with theology. The capacity to hear is built into being His.
The most important step you can take this week is to open Scripture tomorrow morning expecting to hear, and then practice the loop — pray, read, listen, record, respond. Most likely you will not hear anything dramatic on the first day. Or the third. But somewhere in the second or third week, a verse will land that you cannot unread, and you will know — quietly, mildly, but unmistakably — that He has spoken.
That moment will change the texture of your faith. Not because anything new has happened, but because the relationship that was always there has become audible. You will have learned the second half of the conversation. And once you have learned it, you will not forget how.

Fifth, it produces a "burning" the Bible describes in Luke 24:32 — a deep recognition that this verse is for you. When several of these line up, you are most likely hearing God.
What is two-way prayer?

How long does it take to learn to hear God's voice?
It is a skill that develops with practice, like any other relational skill. Most people who consistently spend 15–20 minutes a day in the prayer-and-Scripture loop begin to experience clearer impressions within a few weeks. The early hearings are often modest — a verse that lingers, a quiet conviction, a settled peace. The dramatic moments come later, and rarely. The point is not to chase intensity but to build the relationship in which God's voice becomes recognizable. Samuel needed Eli to tell him "go again, lie down" (1 Samuel 3:9) before he learned to recognize the Lord's voice — and Samuel was already in the temple.
What if I open my Bible and feel nothing?
Read anyway. Feeling is not the measure of God's voice — Scripture is. Hebrews 4:12 says the word is "quick and powerful" regardless of how you feel about it. Many of God's clearest messages have come to people who felt nothing while reading and only later realized what He had said. Keep reading. Pray Psalm 119:18 — "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law." Trust that you are being spoken to even on the days when you cannot hear.
