BOOK OF MORMON
Alma 35
Chapter 35 of 63
What happens in Alma 35
The Zoramite mission concludes as the ruling class expels the converted poor, who are received by the people of Ammon in Jershon. The enraged Zoramites ally with the Lamanites and begin preparations for war. Grieved by growing wickedness and looming conflict, Alma gathers his sons to deliver his final counsel.
Alma 35
The Converted Expelled and Received
Study note
After the preaching of Alma and Amulek, the wealthy Zoramite leaders consult together and, angered by the words spoken against them, expel anyone who believed the missionaries. These poor converts make their way to Jershon and are received by the people of Ammon, who minister to their needs -- clothing, land, and community. The Zoramite rulers demand the people of Ammon cast out the new converts, but the people of Ammon refuse, showing the same generous spirit that the Nephites had shown them.
War Preparations and Alma's Grief
Study note
The Zoramites, furious at being defied, begin mixing with the Lamanites and preparing for war. The people of Ammon move to the land of Melek to make room for Nephite armies in Jershon. Alma is grieved for the iniquity of his people and the bloodshed he sees coming. In response, he gathers each of his sons to give them personal counsel, beginning the extended farewell discourse that will span the next seven chapters. This transition marks a shift from public missionary work to intimate family instruction.
Themes in Alma 35
How this chapter points to Christ
The expulsion of believing Zoramites from their synagogues closely parallels the experience in John's Gospel where Jews who confessed Jesus were put out of the synagogue, showing the recurring pattern of religious establishment persecuting its own who embrace new truth.
The people of Ammon receiving the expelled converts and ministering to their needs embodies the Hebrews exhortation to show hospitality to strangers and remember those who suffer, as though suffering alongside them.
Living Alma 35
When the poor Zoramite converts were cast out, they did not return to their former ways -- they found a new community among the people of Ammon. Choosing to follow Christ may cost you relationships, status, or comfort. But God always provides a new family of believers to walk beside you. If you are experiencing loss because of your faith, look for the people God is sending to receive you, and be willing to receive others who are paying that same cost.
