BOOK OF MORMON
Helaman 10
Chapter 10 of 16
What happens in Helaman 10
As the crowds disperse, Nephi walks home pondering God's revelations. A divine voice commends his unwearyingness and grants him the extraordinary sealing power: whatever he binds on earth will be bound in heaven. He immediately returns to preach, but the people reject his message and begin to destroy one another.
Helaman 10
Nephi Ponders on the Way Home
Study note
After the dramatic events at the judgment-seat, the crowd scatters, leaving Nephi alone. He walks toward home, deeply cast down because of the people's wickedness, their secret works, and their murders. This quiet moment of solitary reflection sets the stage for one of the most significant divine communications in the Book of Mormon. God often speaks most powerfully in the quiet aftermath of public turmoil.
God Grants Nephi the Sealing Power
Study note
A divine voice stops Nephi on his path. God declares that He has observed Nephi's unwearyingness in declaring the word and promises to bless him forever. Then comes the extraordinary commission: 'I give unto you power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.' God grants Nephi power over the elements, over famine and pestilence, and declares that He will not allow Nephi to ask anything contrary to His will. This sealing power directly parallels the keys Christ would later give to Peter.
Nephi Returns to Preach and Is Rejected
Study note
Rather than going home, Nephi immediately returns to the multitudes to deliver God's message: repent or be destroyed. Despite the miracle of the murder prophecy, the people harden their hearts and refuse to listen. When they try to seize him, he is carried away by the Spirit from multitude to multitude. They begin fighting among themselves with the sword, ending the year in violence. This tragic conclusion demonstrates that even the most powerful prophetic ministry cannot override human agency.
Themes in Helaman 10
How this chapter points to Christ
The sealing power given to Nephi, where what he seals on earth is sealed in heaven, directly parallels Jesus giving Peter the keys of the kingdom, with the promise that what Peter binds on earth will be bound in heaven.
Nephi's power to command famine and pestilence parallels Elijah's authority to shut and open the heavens, which James references as an example of the effective prayer of a righteous man.
Nephi being taken by the Spirit and conveyed away from those who sought to arrest him parallels moments when Jesus passed through hostile crowds untouched, demonstrating divine protection of His servants.
Living Helaman 10
God's commendation of Nephi highlights a quality every believer can develop: unwearyingness. You may not part seas or seal the heavens, but you can show up faithfully day after day in prayer, service, and testimony. God notices persistence. He honors those who do not seek their own will but align themselves so fully with His that He can trust them with greater power. Start where you are. Be faithful in the small things today, and watch what God can do through a willing heart.
