BOOK OF MORMON
Mormon 7
Chapter 7 of 9
What happens in Mormon 7
Mormon's final message to future descendants of Lehi. In just ten verses, he distills the essential gospel: know your identity as Israel, repent, believe in Christ, be baptized, and lay hold upon the gospel. This is a dying prophet's testimony, offered with love to those he will never meet.
Mormon 7
Know who you are
Study note
Mormon addresses the remnant of Lehi's descendants who will one day receive his words. His repeated use of "know ye" carries the urgency of a father's last counsel. He declares their identity as members of the house of Israel, calls them to repentance, and urges them to lay down weapons of war.
The gospel of Jesus Christ
Study note
Mormon testifies of Christ's death, resurrection, and victory over the grave. He explains the resurrection, the judgment, and the promise of dwelling in God's presence in a state of endless happiness. He urges his readers to be baptized, believe the Bible and the Book of Mormon together, and know that they are of the first covenant. His final word is "Amen," sealing his testimony with prophetic authority.
Themes in Mormon 7
How this chapter points to Christ
Mormon's testimony that in Christ "the sting of death is swallowed up" directly echoes Paul's triumphant declaration: "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" Both testify of Christ's complete victory over death.
Mormon's teaching that the Bible and the Book of Mormon testify of each other parallels Jesus' instruction to search the scriptures, for they testify of Him. Mormon understood that multiple witnesses strengthen faith.
Living Mormon 7
Mormon's final message is strikingly simple: know who you are, repent, believe in Christ, be baptized, and lay hold upon the gospel. Even from the brink of annihilation, he does not complicate the message. This clarity reminds us that the essentials of faith are not complex. Whatever our circumstances, the path forward is always the same: turn to Christ, accept His grace, and follow Him.
