BOOK OF MORMON
Moroni 1
Chapter 1 of 10
What happens in Moroni 1
Moroni explains why he continues to write after believing he was finished. He wanders alone, refusing to deny the Christ even though the Lamanites put every Nephite to death who will not deny Him. He writes a few more things, hoping they may benefit future generations.
Moroni 1
Moroni's solitary survival and undeniable faith
Study note
Moroni had thought his writing was complete after the Book of Ether, but he has not yet perished. He hides from the Lamanites, whose fierce wars among themselves are matched only by their hatred of anyone who will not deny the Christ. Moroni's declaration, "I will not deny the Christ," is among the most quietly heroic statements in scripture. He wanders without a home, writing what he can, trusting that his words may someday bless the descendants of those who now seek his life.
Themes in Moroni 1
How this chapter points to Christ
Moroni's refusal to deny Christ echoes Jesus' teaching: "Whosoever shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father."
Living Moroni 1
Moroni's refusal to deny Christ, when doing so would save his life, challenges us to consider how deeply we hold our own convictions. What would we give up to maintain our faith? Moroni's example teaches that faithfulness is not measured by comfort but by commitment. Even when alone and hunted, he chose Christ over survival.
