David W. Patten Called to Prepare for a Mission

Study note

The Lord instructs David to prepare for a spring mission by settling his business, disposing of merchandise, and readying himself for the Twelve's upcoming work.

1 Verily thus saith the Lord: It is wisdom in my servant David W. Patten, that he settle up all his business as soon as he possibly can, and make a disposition of his merchandise, that he may perform a mission unto me next spring, in company with others, even twelve including himself, to testify of my name and bear glad tidings unto all the world.
2 For verily thus saith the Lord, that inasmuch as there are those among you who deny my name, others shall be planted in their stead and receive their bishopric. Amen.

How this section connects to Christ

D&C 114 1 2 Timothy 4:6-7

Patten's imminent death while preparing for service echoes Paul's reflection that he had fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith, with a crown of righteousness awaiting him.

D&C 114 2 Luke 14:28-30

The instruction to settle business before serving parallels Jesus' counsel to count the cost before building a tower, ensuring one can finish what one begins.

Living D&C 114

David W. Patten's story is deeply poignant. He was called to a mission he would never serve because he gave his life defending his fellow Saints. His willingness to prepare reminds us that faithfulness is measured not by outcomes we control but by our willingness to respond to God's call. Sometimes the Lord's purposes are fulfilled in ways we cannot foresee, and a willingness to serve is itself a form of completion.
