What happens in D&C 37

Received in December 1830 near Fayette, New York. This brief but pivotal revelation commanded the Saints to leave New York and gather together in Ohio. It marked the beginning of the gathering movement that would define early Latter-day Saint history.

D&C 37

Command to Gather to Ohio

Study note

The Lord commands the Saints to assemble in Ohio to escape their enemies and to receive his law.

1 Behold, I say unto you that it is not expedient in me that ye should translate any more until ye shall go to the Ohio, and this because of the enemy and for your sakes.
2 And again, I say unto you that ye shall not go until ye have preached my gospel in those parts, and have strengthened up the church whithersoever it is found, and more especially in Colesville; for, behold, they pray unto me in much faith.

Promise of Power from on High

Study note

The Lord promises that in Ohio the Saints will be endowed with power and given further instruction.

3 And again, a commandment I give unto the church, that it is expedient in me that they should assemble together at the Ohio, against the time that my servant Oliver Cowdery shall return unto them.
4 Behold, here is wisdom, and let every man choose for himself until I come. Even so. Amen.

How this section connects to Christ

D&C 37 1-2 Genesis 12:1

Like Abraham who was told to leave his country and kindred for a promised land, the Saints were commanded to leave New York for Ohio with faith in God's plan.

D&C 37 3-4 Luke 24:49

Jesus told the apostles to tarry in Jerusalem until endowed with power from on high, just as the Saints were promised an endowment when they gathered to Ohio.

Living D&C 37

The early Saints were asked to leave their homes and livelihoods with little detail about what awaited them. This kind of trust in God's direction is still relevant today. We may not always see the full picture when prompted to make changes in our lives, but obedience often precedes understanding. Gathering with fellow believers—whether physically or spiritually—provides strength and protection. God's promises are always fulfilled, even when the path forward is unclear.
