How this section connects to Christ
The Lord stands at the door and knocks, just as He repeatedly invited Covill to open his heart to the restored covenant despite years of prior worship.
Jesus's teaching that one must be born of water and the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God is directly reflected in the call for Covill to be baptized and receive the Holy Ghost.
Like the rich young ruler who was invited to leave everything and follow Christ but turned away, Covill was invited to forsake his old ministry for the restored gospel.
Living D&C 39
James Covill's story illustrates that sincerity in past religious service does not automatically prepare us to accept new truth. Even after decades of ministry, Covill faced the challenge of humbling himself to accept further light. We all encounter moments when our established beliefs are challenged by new understanding. The courage to set aside pride and tradition in favor of truth is one of the greatest tests of discipleship. God honors our past efforts but always invites us to progress further.
