DOCTRINE & COVENANTS
D&C 70
Section 70 of 138
What happens in D&C 70
Received on November 12, 1831, in Hiram, Ohio. This revelation appointed Joseph Smith, Martin Harris, Oliver Cowdery, John Whitmer, Sidney Rigdon, and William W. Phelps as stewards over the revelations and commandments. They were given responsibility to manage the publication and distribution of the revelations and would give an account to the Lord for this stewardship.
D&C 70
Stewards Over the Revelations Appointed
Study note
Specific individuals are appointed as stewards over the revelations, responsible for their publication and distribution to the Church.
Stewardship Accountability and Equality
Study note
The stewards will give an account to God for their management. Any profits are to be used for the benefit of all, not for personal gain.
The Law of Equality in Temporal Things
Study note
The principle of equality is reaffirmed: those who have abundance should share with those who lack, as a fundamental law of the kingdom.

How this section connects to Christ
Paul described himself and other ministers as stewards of the mysteries of God, required above all to be faithful—the same stewardship principle applied to these men.
Jesus's parable of the faithful steward who manages the master's household well and gives an account directly parallels the accountability required here.
Paul's teaching on equality—that the abundance of some should supply the lack of others—is the same principle of temporal equality taught in this revelation.
Living D&C 70
This revelation teaches that even revelations from God require stewards to bring them to the world. The word of God does not distribute itself—faithful people must be organized, responsible, and accountable to publish and share it. The principle that profits from this sacred work should benefit the whole community, not enrich individuals, is a powerful check on using religious work for personal gain. In our own lives, whatever spiritual gifts or responsibilities we receive are stewardships, not possessions. We will account to God for how we used what He gave us—whether it is a calling, a testimony, a talent, or material resources.
