Received in March 1832, in Hiram, Ohio. This brief revelation called Jared Carter to go forth and preach the gospel. Carter had already been an effective missionary, and the Lord affirmed his calling and promised him the Holy Spirit as his guide.

Jared Carter's Missionary Call

Jared Carter is called to preach the gospel from land to land and city to city. The Lord promises the Holy Ghost will accompany him and he will receive power to declare the truth.

1 Verily I say unto you, that it is my will that my servant Jared Carter should go again into the eastern countries, from place to place, and from city to city, in the power of the ordination wherewith he has been ordained, proclaiming glad tidings of great joy, even the everlasting gospel.

2 And I will send upon him the Comforter, which shall teach him the truth and the way whither he shall go;

3 And inasmuch as he is faithful, I will crown him again with sheaves.

4 Wherefore, let your heart be glad, my servant Jared Carter, and fear not, saith your Lord, even Jesus Christ. Amen.

Even though this is one of the shortest revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants, it reminds us that God knows each of us individually and has specific work for us to do. Jared Carter was not a prominent leader, yet the Lord spoke a personal revelation just for him. No matter how small our assignment may seem, when it comes from God, it carries eternal significance. The Lord's promise that the Comforter would accompany Jared is the same promise available to every person who steps forward in faith to share the gospel.
