John 3:16 — KJV vs Clarity Edition
The most-searched verse in the Bible, made clearer than ever.
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
"God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son. Anyone who believes in him will not be lost but will have eternal life."
The Clarity Edition replaces archaic terms like "whosoever believeth" and "everlasting" with modern equivalents while preserving the full theological meaning of the original KJV text.
Understanding John 3:16
John 3:16 is often called the gospel in a single sentence. In the span of a few words, it captures the entire arc of Christian salvation: the motivation (God's love), the action (giving his Son), the condition (belief), and the outcome (eternal life versus perishing).
The phrase "so loved" in the KJV has sometimes been read as expressing the degree or intensity of God's love — and that reading is correct. The Greek word houtos carries the sense of "in this way" or "to this extent." God's love was not passive sentiment but an active, costly gift.
The word "only begotten" (Greek: monogenes) means "one and only" — unique, not one among many sons. The Clarity Edition renders this as "one and only Son," which is both more precise to the Greek and instantly understandable to modern readers.
"Perish" in this context refers to spiritual death and separation from God — not merely physical death. And "eternal life" is more than unending duration. In John's Gospel, eternal life begins now through relationship with God (see John 17:3). This verse is simultaneously an invitation and a promise.
When and why this was written
John 3:16 appears within a night-time conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council. Nicodemus came to Jesus privately, acknowledging that he was a teacher sent from God. The exchange that follows explores themes of spiritual rebirth, the nature of God's kingdom, and what it means to be "born again."
Scholars debate whether verses 16–21 are Jesus' own words or John's theological commentary on the conversation. Either way, they represent the Gospel of John's core theological message. Written likely between AD 85–100, John's Gospel addressed communities who needed clarity on the identity of Jesus as the divine Word (Logos) who became flesh. This verse anchors that entire theological project in the simplest terms possible: God acted because God loves.
Living John 3:16
- Anchor your identity in love, not fear. If the foundation of your faith is God's love rather than judgment, it changes how you approach every spiritual practice — prayer, scripture study, and service all become responses to love rather than attempts to earn approval.
- Share the verse accessibly. John 3:16 is one of the most universally recognized scriptures. Using the Clarity Edition's modern language when sharing it with someone unfamiliar with the Bible can remove the language barrier that sometimes makes this verse feel distant.
- Meditate on the word "anyone." There are no exceptions in this verse. Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, whatever your history, this invitation is addressed to you specifically.
- Let eternal life start now. John 17:3 defines eternal life as knowing God. That relationship can begin today through study, prayer, and community — not just after death.
