The Watchman's Duty
Study note
God repeated and expanded the watchman teaching from chapter 3. If a watchman on a city wall sees the enemy coming and blows the trumpet, anyone who ignores the warning is responsible for their own death. But if the watchman fails to blow the trumpet, the watchman is held responsible. God applied this directly to Ezekiel: he must warn the wicked to turn from their ways.
1 The Lord spoke to me. Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 "Son of man, speak to your people. Tell them: Suppose I bring the sword against a land, and the people living there select one of their own to serve as a lookout." Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:
3 "If that lookout sees the enemy army approaching and blows the warning trumpet," If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
4 "and someone hears the trumpet but ignores the warning and gets killed -- that person's death is their own fault." Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
5 "They heard the trumpet and chose to ignore it. Their death is on their own head. If they had heeded the warning, they would still be alive." He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.
6 "But if the lookout sees the enemy coming and fails to blow the trumpet, so the people are not warned, and the sword comes and kills someone -- that person dies because of their own sin. But I will hold the lookout accountable for their death." But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.
7 "Son of man, I have appointed you as a lookout for the people of Israel. So listen to every word I speak and relay my warnings to them." So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.
8 "When I announce to a wicked person, 'You are going to die,' and you fail to speak up and warn them to change course, that wicked person will die in their sin. But I will hold you accountable for their death." When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
9 "But if you deliver the warning and the wicked person still refuses to change, they will die in their sin. But you will have saved your own life." Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
Individual Responsibility Restated
Study note
The exiles were saying, 'Our sins are crushing us. How can we survive?' God responded that he takes no pleasure in anyone's death. A wicked person who turns from their sin will live, and a righteous person who turns to sin will die. Past righteousness cannot save someone who chooses evil, and past wickedness will not condemn someone who genuinely repents. The people called this unfair, but God insisted it was their ways that were unfair.
10 "Son of man, the Israelites are saying, 'Our sins and crimes are crushing us. We are wasting away under their weight. How can we possibly go on living?'" Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?
11 "Answer them: I swear on my life, says the Lord God, I find no pleasure whatsoever in a wicked person's death. What I truly want is for them to turn from their evil path and live! Turn around! Turn away from your wicked lifestyle! Why would you choose death, people of Israel?" Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
12 "Son of man, tell your people: A righteous person's past goodness will not rescue them once they start sinning. And a wicked person's past wickedness will not destroy them once they turn from it. A previously righteous person who turns to sin will not survive on the strength of their former good deeds." Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.
13 "If I promise a righteous person that they will live, but then they start relying on their own goodness and do evil -- none of their past righteous deeds will count. They will die because of the evil they chose to do." When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.
14 "And if I tell a wicked person, 'You are going to die,' but they turn away from their sin and start living an honest life --" Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;
15 "What if they give back what they took? What if they return what they stole? What if they follow the rules that give life and quit doing evil? Then they will live. They will not die." If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.
16 "Not one of their former sins will be counted against them. They have chosen to do what is fair and right. They will certainly live." None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.
17 "Yet your people keep complaining, 'The Lord is not being fair.' But their own way of thinking is what is unfair." Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.
18 "When someone who has been living right abandons that path and turns to evil, they will die because of it." When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.
19 "When a wicked person abandons their evil ways and starts doing what is fair and right, that person will live." But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.
20 "Yet you keep insisting, 'The Lord is not fair.' But I will judge every one of you according to your own choices, people of Israel." Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.
News of Jerusalem's Fall
Study note
In the twelfth year of exile, a survivor arrived with the devastating news: 'The city has fallen!' This confirmed everything Ezekiel had prophesied. The evening before the messenger arrived, God had opened Ezekiel's mouth, ending his years of restricted speech. This was the pivotal moment that divided Ezekiel's ministry between judgment and hope.
21 In the twelfth year of our exile, a man who fled Jerusalem came to me. It was the tenth month, on the fifth day. He said, "The city has fallen!" And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten.
22 The evening before the refugee arrived, the Lord's hand had come over me and opened my mouth. So by the time the man reached me the next morning, I could already speak again. I was no longer mute. Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.
Those Left in the Ruins
Study note
The few people left in the ruins of Jerusalem claimed the land was theirs, reasoning that if Abraham alone inherited the land, surely they as many people should inherit it. But God condemned them because they continued sinning, eating meat with blood, worshipping idols, and committing violence. The land would remain desolate because of their behavior.
23 Then the Lord gave me a message. Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
24 "Son of man, the people squatting in the ruins back in Israel are saying, 'Abraham was just one man, and he received ownership of the whole land. There are lots of us, so the land must surely belong to us now.'" Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.
25 "So tell them the Lord God says: You eat meat with the blood still in it. You look to your idols for help. You commit murder. And you think you deserve to own the land?" Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?
26 "You depend on your swords. You do revolting things. Every man among you dishonors his neighbor's wife. And you think you deserve to own the land?" Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour's wife: and shall ye possess the land?
27 "Tell them the Lord God says: I swear on my life -- those living in the ruins will die by the sword. Those out in the countryside I will feed to wild animals. Those hiding in fortresses and caves will die of disease." Say thou thus unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that be in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.
28 "I will turn the land into a barren wasteland. Its proud power will be crushed. The mountains of Israel will become so desolate that nobody will dare cross them." For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through.
29 "Then they will know that I am the Lord, once I have made the land a total wasteland because of all the revolting things they have done." Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.
Hearers but Not Doers
Study note
God told Ezekiel that the people talked about his messages with each other and came to hear him as if attending entertainment. They listened with pleasure but did not put his words into practice. They were like people who enjoyed a beautiful song but ignored its meaning. When everything Ezekiel prophesied came true, they would finally realize a true prophet had been among them.
30 "As for you, son of man, your own people are whispering about you beside the walls and in their doorways. They say to each other, 'Come on, let us go hear what message the Lord has!'" Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.
31 "So they come and sit in front of you like my people always do. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths talk about devotion, but their hearts are chasing money." And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
32 "To them, you are just entertainment -- like someone singing love songs with a beautiful voice or playing a skillful tune. They enjoy listening to you, but they never do what you say." And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
33 "But when everything I said comes true — and it will — they will finally admit that a real prophet was among them." And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.
