What happens in Psalms 121

A beloved Song of Ascents. The psalmist looks up to the hills and asks where his help comes from. The answer: from the Lord, who never sleeps and watches over us at all times.

Psalms 121

My Help Comes from the Lord

Study note

The psalmist lifts his eyes to the mountains and asks where his help comes from. My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip. He who watches over Israel never sleeps.

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills, from where comes my help. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help comes straight from the LORD, the one who made heaven and earth. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
3 He will never let your foot slide off the path. The one watching over you never falls asleep. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 The one who guards Israel truly never dozes off or sleeps. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord Watches Over You

Study note

The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun will not harm you by day nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm. He will watch over your coming and going, now and forever.

5 The LORD himself watches over you. The LORD stands beside you like cool shade on a hot day. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6 The blazing sun will not hurt you during the day, and the moon will not harm you at night. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep all harm away from you. He will watch over your whole life. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8 The LORD will guard you as you go out and as you come back, from this day on and forever. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Living Psalms 121

Where does your help come from? Not from the mountains, not from your own strength, not from anyone else — from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He does not sleep. He does not look away. He guards your life now and forevermore. You are watched over by someone who never gets tired of caring for you.
