Psalms 149

Sing a New Song

Study note

Praise the Lord! Sing a new song to the Lord in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in their Maker. Let them praise his name with dancing and make music. The Lord takes delight in his people and crowns the humble with victory.

1 Praise the LORD! Sing the LORD a new song! Let his praise ring out wherever his faithful people gather together. Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel be thrilled with the God who made them. Let the people of Zion jump for joy because of their King. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name with dancing! Let them make joyful music with tambourines and harps! Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4 The LORD is delighted with his people. He crowns humble people with the beauty of his saving power. For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

A Double-Edged Sword

Study note

Let the faithful rejoice and sing even on their beds. Let praise for God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands — to carry out God's justice among the nations. This is the glory of all his faithful people. Praise the Lord!

5 Let his faithful people celebrate his glory! Let them shout for joy even as they lie on their beds at night! Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 Let praise for God ring from their lips while they hold a sharp, two-edged sword in their hands, Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 ready to bring justice to the nations and punishment to the peoples, To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8 ready to lock up their kings in chains and their leaders in iron shackles, To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 ready to carry out the sentence that was already written down. This is an honor given to all his faithful people. Praise the LORD! To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.
