SCRIPTURE STUDY
What Is the Clarity Edition?
A modern approach to scripture that removes the language barrier without removing the meaning.
When I started building Covenant Path, one question kept surfacing in conversations with fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: "I want to study the scriptures every day, but I get stuck on the language." Words like hath, whence, wist, and howbeit create invisible walls between sincere readers and the meaning they are trying to find. The Clarity Edition was built to tear those walls down.
This post explains exactly what the Clarity Edition is, how it was built, and what makes it different from every other modern scripture translation on the market.
Why archaic language matters more than you think
The King James Version of the Bible averages a 12th-grade reading level. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54 percent of American adults read below a 6th-grade level. That gap is not a spiritual failing — it is a language barrier that has been in place since 1611.
Most people adapt by reading more slowly, re-reading passages, or simply accepting that large portions of scripture are opaque. What they lose in that process is momentum — the feeling of a text actually speaking to them in real time. Comprehension breaks the connection between reader and meaning.
Other modern translations solve this by rewriting everything. The result is often a paraphrase that loses doctrinal precision, theological nuance, or the specific vocabulary that Latter-day Saint study depends on. The Clarity Edition takes a different approach.
Rewrite only what needs rewriting
The Clarity Edition's founding principle is simple: if the KJV is already clear, leave it alone. Every verse was evaluated using Flesch-Kincaid readability analysis. Only passages that scored above the target reading level — or that contained archaic vocabulary, complex syntax, or genuinely ambiguous phrasing — were rewritten.
Familiar, clear verses like John 3:16 or Philippians 4:13 are preserved. Passages dense with thee, dost, beseech, and wherefore are modernized at a grade 5.56 reading level — lower than the original target of 6.3. The data drove every decision.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Already clear at this level — no rewrite needed.
The full scope: 41,995 verses, five volumes
The Clarity Edition spans all five standard works used in Latter-day Saint scripture study:
- Old Testament and New Testament — the two volumes with the heaviest concentration of archaic KJV language, both rewritten where needed
- Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price — original text preserved entirely, with full enrichment layers added throughout
Across all five volumes, the Clarity Edition includes 18,334 study aids: 1,668 book and chapter introductions, 5,539 thematic sections, 7,387 key themes, 1,582 life applications, and 2,158 cross-references. These are not decorative additions — they are carefully constructed context built to make every study session more productive.
More accurate, not less
One concern readers often raise about modern translations is accuracy. The Clarity Edition is designed to be more accurate in important ways, not less.
Vocabulary that has shifted in meaning since 1611 is corrected: charity becomes love, conversation becomes way of life, prevent becomes go before. Greek word distinctions collapsed in the KJV are restored — for example, hades, gehenna, and tartarus are rendered distinctly rather than all translated as "hell."
Disputed passages like Mark 16:9-20 and the Johannine Comma are preserved and consistent with the KJV, with contextual notes where relevant. Nothing is quietly removed.
You choose the experience
Inside Covenant Path, the Clarity Edition is not a replacement for the KJV — it is a companion. Readers can switch between three modes at any time:
- Original — the King James Version exactly as you know it
- Clarity — modern English only, at a 5th-grade reading level
- Side by Side — both versions in parallel columns for deep comparative study
Tap any verse in any mode to peek at the alternate version without losing your place. This makes the Clarity Edition useful whether you are a lifelong KJV reader exploring modern language for the first time, or a new member encountering scripture study with fresh eyes.
Anyone who wants to actually understand what they are reading
The Clarity Edition is for the returned missionary who loves the scriptures but finds their morning study drifting because the language slows comprehension. It is for the parent trying to make family scripture study engaging for a ten-year-old. It is for the investigator encountering the Bible for the first time. And it is for the scholar who wants to compare the KJV alongside a modern rendering for deeper analysis.
If you have ever paused on a verse and thought "I know this is important but I am not sure what it means" — the Clarity Edition was built for that moment.
