BOOK OF MORMON
Moroni 4
Chapter 4 of 10
What happens in Moroni 4
Moroni records the sacramental prayer over the bread, a prayer still used word for word today. It is a covenant to take upon us the name of Christ, always remember Him, and keep His commandments, with the promise that His Spirit will always be with us.
Moroni 4
The sacramental prayer over the bread
Study note
Moroni carefully preserves the exact words of the prayer spoken when the elders and priests administered the bread. The prayer addresses God the Eternal Father, asking Him to bless and sanctify the bread to the souls of those who partake. The partakers witness three things: their willingness to take upon them the name of Christ, their commitment to always remember Him, and their determination to keep His commandments. The promised blessing is the constant companionship of His Spirit.
Themes in Moroni 4
How this chapter points to Christ
The sacramental prayer, with its focus on remembering Christ's body and entering into covenant, parallels Jesus' institution of the Lord's Supper at the Last Supper, where He said, "This do in remembrance of me."
Living Moroni 4
The sacramental prayer is one of the most important prayers in the life of a disciple. Each time we partake, we renew our covenant with God. The three promises, to take upon us Christ's name, to always remember Him, and to keep His commandments, are not requirements we must perfectly fulfill but commitments we are willing to pursue. The blessing in return, the constant companionship of the Holy Spirit, is the greatest gift God offers in mortal life.
